Is the Golly offensive enough to cause two Prospective Tory councillors to quit, or are they victims of political correctness?

Golly, the goalposts keep changing on this thread don't they? I will only say that of course I had a Golliwog doll and I loved it dearly (child of the fifties) I did however detest those Cabbage Patch Kids, thank goodness my daughters never wanted one.

Gromit. I couldn't care less. But I'd think the one doing the act had something wrong with them, as it is cleary done in the hope of causing offense. That is different to something clearly not there to cause offense, but to which some feel offended. A child's toy is simply that.

Back to th OP. This couple posed with Golliwogs knowing it would be offensive to some people. Just like the idiots in Kensington who burned the poppys. They are the same act. Yo have to say both are acceptable or neither is acceptable. Accepting one act of provocation and castigating the other is hypicrisy and inconsistant.

It doesn't have to be religious to make it provocative. This couple knew what they were doing and they wanted to provoke a response. Unfortunately the response was that their own party disowned them.

They may have their fifteen minutes of fame, but to a lot of people they look silly.

If Gaddafi went on television clutching a doll dressed in a policewomans uniform, would that be acceptable? It would be just an innocent toy after all?

I probably have.

I also used to own and wear Robertson's Golly badges when I was younger and saw no harm in it. I would not wear one now, not because of being nobbled by the PC brigade, but because I now know it can be offensive.

I go out of my way not to offend, unlike this dreadful couple, who post daft pictures of themselves on the internet to deliberately offend. Unfortunately for them, it offended the party's leadership who have turfed them out.

It's a stereotype too - the golly in the Noddy books was always the streetwise wide boy..... the days of the Black and White Minstrels come to mind, all seen as good clean fun in their heyday.

Golly has many adventures in the series of books published over twelve years, which include 'The Golliwogg's Polar Adventures', 'The Golliwogg's Fox Hunt' and 'The Golliwogg at the Seaside'. These books now sell for around £300 to £500 in very good condition so, if you have one, dig it out! I was lucky enough to pick up a copy of 'The Golliwogg's Polar Adventures' for £20.00 at auction about a year ago. Needless to say, the book is in a pretty sorry state but the plates are in lovely conditionOne day, when I have lots of money I will get it repaired. Florence Upton's Golly was the hero of the day in these tales. Golly in the Enid Blyton 'Noddy' series is more of a mischievous chap and likely to get into trouble. Perhaps this was one of the reasons that Enid Blyton books were taken off the school library shelf - in fact the Gollies are really lovable characters who added spice to the stories!

My Grandfather was Irish and he used to say he was going home to visit the bogtrotters, so I'm afraid the word has stuck with me since childhood. I did use it in an offensive way in the original post (I meant it to be amusing but it wasn't, which is why I admitted that I probably had been offensive Irish people). Presumably, since you did not claim I offended German people, you do not find the word 'Kraut' similarly offensive?
