iPad 2 goes on sale

Call me a grumpy old man (you'd be right), but what advantage does anyone secure by queuing all night outside a store just to be one of the first to own one of these gadgets? Are some people's lives so shallow for 'first ownership' to be important to them?

I think the iPad is the best selling con of the century. I am yet to be convinced by anyone the benefit of having one. Other than the ability to look like a smug t**t on the train.

I would love an ipad but I aint going to kill anybody to get one, thing is, they are still new technology and they are changing rapidly and new updated ones will be coming out every few months, i will wait until the market has settled a little before I buy.

I have no need of things like iPad anyway but have never been an 'early adopter' due to bug-ridden software and unreliable hardware. I am like Ratter, I wait for things to get to a stage of working properly, and dropping in price, before I buy them.

I agree about waiting for new products to become more developed though to avoid the glitches. The iPhone 4 being a prime example.

There is nothing wrong with wanting new things when they come out if that is your thing. It is the queuing up overnight etc that I find moronic.

Apple really know how to sucker the simpleminded.
The only improvements in the iPad 2 are those that should and could have been in the original iPad. Apple always release crippled stuff, so that the suckers will rush to buy the next model, which will be only slightly less crippled.

Just think about it: there's loads of people out there with 3,4,5,10 year old computers that work fine, so they have no reason to upgrade. If Apple had made an iPad that worked fine, all those users who rushed to buy the first one and sing its praises, would have no need to buy the second one (or the third or the fourth).

I'm writing this to you on an original iPad, which I got for my birthday last year...and I am going to to try and explain why it became such an integral part of my life.

Prior to getting the iPad, I stated that I couldn't see the point of it. I had an iPhone, and an iPod Touch, and a laptop at home, plus a laptop at work - so what the hell would I need another media device for?

Didn't take too long to realise the potential.

I will summarise it thus, by walking you though a typical day:

1. When I get up, I can download the latest edition of the I newspaper from the Independent to read on the bus into work. After downloading that, after a shower, I download the latest crossword from The Daily Telegraph into a dedicated app.

2. After reading the key strories from I Newspaper, I have a go at then crossword, give up, and then turn to the video app to watch whatever I've ripped from a DVD (films, music videos or tv shows - currently Peep Show).

3. Later in the day, I catch up on emails, and Twitter feeds, and use the Facebook portal to arrange the forthcoming weekend.

5. After sorting out the weekend, I might check out what films are out this weekend, and then turn on the Empire magazine app to read the reviews.

6. Using my bank's dedicated portal app, I can check my account, or rather gasp in horror at my account.

7. Answer Bank - much better logging onto the site via an iPad than an iPhone.

8. Gym after work - iFitness is the best training app on the Market. Those who have used it know what I'm talking about. I take my iPhone to the gym, track my training and then sync it up with my iPad which shows me how I'm progressing.

9. On the way home, I might flip open iBooks and read a few pages - currently, I have about 20 books sitting on my iPad...imagine carrying 20 paperbacks around

10. Finally back home - have adds mates coming round for a curry - plug my iPad into the stereo and put the music onto random play for background tunes.

All of that doesn't even scratch the surface.

Is it for show offs? Undoubtably. 

Is it a useful tool? Absolutely.

My PAYG phone cost me a tenner. I suppose the people who would queue all night for the latest technology wouldn't pick it up if they seen it lying in the street

Depends - a £10 pay as you go phone is a completely different bit of kit to a smartphone.

It's like comparing a landline to a computer. A smartphone isn't a mobile phone - it's a pocket PC.
