From the article - “... The city also hopes to establish a world record for the number of people attending a mass circumcision...”
and
“... In rural areas, the surgery is sometimes performed by non-doctors using crude methods...”
What the hell is wrong with these people? Why do they think that a foreskin is so abhorrent that it requires removal with a knife? Don't they believe that God made man in His own image? If so, they must have a very low opinion of God to deliberately disfigure His creation.
This kind of thing makes me so angry. It is utterly sick and another example of religious barbarity inflicted upon the human race. The poor boys.
I'm sure Mike11111 will be along any minute to tell me off about being anti-religious and arrogant.

I've also read of female circumcision. To achieve that, the clitoris is sliced off and in some cases, the labia are cut and stitched together (leaving a hole just large enough to pee through – aren't they thoughtful?) so that when it heals, it knits together. The 'logic' being that if a women doesn't enjoy sex or finds sexual intercourse painful, she'll never have need to cheat on her husband for her own sexual gratification (which is now impossible given her condition).
This practise is carried out because of religious beliefs that teach that a woman shouldn’t enjoy sex but should simply endure it – no matter how painful or unpleasant.
Religion eh? Isn't it a wonderful gift to the world?

Cowtipper -
Does it really matter where the 'tradition' (if you can call it that) of slicing off a chap's foreskin came from?
The fact is, it has absolutely no benefit to the person whatsoever. It does not mean that the person is less prone to STDs. It does not reduce the risk of AIDS (which is something actually being claimed in certain African countries by certain religious 'leaders'). Slicing off the piece of skin that naturally happens to exist at the end of your penis is utterly stupid and nonsensical. It is a barbaric ritual, practised by barbaric religions and forced upon members of the public by proclaiming that it's 'traditional'.
Putting the cultural / religious argument aside, you've only got to look at the faces of these boys to see just how unpleasant and painful it is.

Oh dude, I wouldn't do this to any son of mine. Nor do I condone it. But 1500 in just over a half a day is a lot of boys. The more I research it the more pics and I think I'm done. Its first known recording is in the late 1500's or the early 1600's. They think it might have come from Muslims but other sources say no.
The problem with practices such as this is that they exist in the limbo between religion and tradition to such an extent that it's difficult to tell which one is which... well, it's not that hard actually...
An example of this is the tradition of Baptisement. This is an entirely invented religious ceremony that is performed to rid the infant child of original sin (!). It was performed by John The Baptist upon Jesus. Since then it has been a religious requirement for all Catholic newborns to be Baptised (or Christened – the terms appear to be interchangeable).
Now, if religious practices and cultures don't interact and mix together then there would be no need nor any desire for non-religious couples to 'Christen' their infant child. But they do. In their droves. And I believe it's very lucrative.
This religious requirement has spilled into mainstream culture and as such, non-religious couples 'Christen' their babies because 'it's the done thing'. A religious requirement has now become 'cultural'.
The point being, Cowtipper, is that despite your claim that, “... this isn't a religious thing.”, I think you'll find that it is.
