For many years Uganda has been notorious for acts of genocide and crimes against humanity.

In the past the West have done very little to change their ways, until now that is.

Now Uganda's parliament appears to have dropped plans to debate a controversial anti-gay bill after a global outcry from US leaders, rights groups and an Internet campaign.

How is it that acts of genocide and crimes against humanity, have not attracted much protest, and yet their anti-gay bill has attracted such a huge amount of protest?

They are already crimes and rightly receive condemnation from all quarters.

This was an attempt to create a *new* crime; it is by no means certain that it won't be resurrected in some form, or other......possibly without the Death Sentence as an option.

The gays in Uganda have to remain undercover for fear of retribution. In the West being gay is almost regarded as being normal. Therefore the gays have come out and since the change in the law realise there are many more out there than we first thought. They perpetuate all walks of life including US leadership, rights groups and flood the internet with their practices.

To be serious for a moment...what you're seeing here is the results of 'viral communication'. We cannot know whether the bill has been dropped because of political pressure, or because Ugandan leaders have been swayed by the sheer scale of the public outcry on the matter.

What IS true is that the killing of gays and lesbians (because of their sexulity) is something that most of us would agree is not a very good thing. It makes protesting against it easier...and also, this story made massive press over here, because of the recent murder of David Kato.

I myself signed the petition when it was sent to me, but I told the sender "Fat lot of good it'll do - the Ugandan government won't take a blind bit of notice to the West".

I was wrong.

I would think that Uganda would have higher priorities than worry about who's dating who. Maybe they ran out of ethnic minorities to commit genocide on and had bullets left over.

I hate people that don't even have kids make up Sugar to worry about. At least your kid will have an income as long as he's open minded.

As DTcrosswordfan said acts of genocide and crimes against humanity in Uganda and many countries attract protest, condemnation and action by a number of different groups and organisations.

This protest was against a specific law/crime which was, and as JTH pointed out is still, in danger of being passed by the Ugandan government.

Also homophobia does come under crimes of humanity - as homosexuals are human whatever rov1100 seems to think! - and so this specific protest could also be seen as a continuation of existing protests
