Just been watching the news coverage from the G8 meeting in France and I noticed that the Union flag was being flown upside down. Did anyone else notice it?

if that is the one we are talking about ankou then it's not upside down. It's all to do with where the pole is, the thicket white bit should be at the top on the pole side, without a pole it is never upside down.
As long as ot wasn't inside out, that's the main thing.
I agree entirely with hc4361 when he says,

/// "I am quite shocked that some people don't know what their own flag should look like".///

It makes one wonder if it is indeed 'THEIR FLAG' when one reads some of the un-patriotic answers on this thread.
Yes modeller and I suppose 90% of the population don't care about spelling or using the correct grammer but that doesn't make it alright. Why is it that in this country it's looked upon as 'cool' to be thick and ignorant? Only in the UK could this attitude prevail. There, that's my rant for today.
^^^^"grammer"..........grammar.

:-)
I'm assuming that was a typo, I make more than enough of them.

Ah yes, it is no more insulting that if other countries had their flags flown upside down because no one cared to have enough respect to fly it correctly, and I'm sure none of the other countries would mind at all.
Dave, since when has it been cool and OK to be thick? that's rather a stupid remark itself actually!!

On the subject of the Union Flag, I also find it rather annoying that it is ever flown upside down, especially at governmental meetings etc where you would think they would know better!!

Ive know the correct way up for the Union flag since I was a child!!
that is my point r1, its not upside down is it, so either there is another flag to see, the poster is wrong, or some feel the need to demonstrate they know something that really isn't that interesting or new.
There seem to be a lot of sad people out there who are preoccupied with the the orientation of the flag and are so desperate for an example of the inverted form that they latch on to anythig.

Denis is the one in ankou's link the one to which you refer?
At least it's not being referred to as the Union Jack! Well done, pedants or not.
If a flag needs instructions on its correct use then something has seriously gone wrong at the design process.

When Scotland gets Independence and the Saint Andrew flag is removed, then hopefully we will not have this problem with the new simplified Union flag.
I wouldn't know or care whether it was upside down or not. Let's face it, it looks pretty similar either way.

If it's such a big deal, they should redesign it so it's got 'THIS WAY UP' written across the middle band.
^^^or they could just have the flag put up by a person with a modicum of intellect!!

Regarding anjous's link, it was not the one I saw. I was watching it on Al Jazeera and it was taken as the delegates arrived for the conference, so it was outside the building.
As a matter of interest, I was once at a caravan site, I forget where it was now, but in the field next to the caravan site, a troop of boys scouts set up camp. They erected a huge flagpole in the middle of the field and ran up the Union flag, upside down!!. I went across and informed the scout leader, and he didn't know it was wrong. However, I noticed later that they had altered it.
Some ABers think that I am being pedantic over this issue, but it is something I have always felt strongly about.
^^^^^ Ditto!!
