Why does Britain need to dish out a further £52m worth of aid on top of the £13million donated by Britons to the DEC East Africa Crisis Appeal launched only a week ago, plus the annual amount we already give in aid to Africa, and the amount we are obliged to donate via The United Nations.?
How much are the wealthy countries of Africa giving from their Gold and Diamond mines?

What a ludicrous answer Askyourgran. This is not the UK. Having your street lights turned off because of cuts is remarkably different to having absolutely no help at all. Birth control is fine for the middle classes in the West, but this is subsistence farming in a third world county, they don't get shelf stacking jobs at Tesco or go on the dole. They die, Our budgets are slashed? Get a life. No-one helps them outside the charities, do something decent, give up £5

Have to agree with you gran, we should sort our country first even down to curtailing white elephant buildings etc including the rubbish for the Olympics, then perhaps we can see to our own people then start looking abroad to help others with money. I despair for the poor souls in Africa but more should have been done for them some years back instead of ploughing money into something that hasn't been helped. Practical work needs doing, wars need to be stopped (some hope) and people need educating, helping and once again, birth control put in place. Hard to accept for some I know but it's the only way forward to long term help for the poor people out there. Meanwhile send water, food and people to help as a matter of urgency.

Milvus, rubbish, we are not the only country in the world who are trying to support these people, Where is the money going? Why is birth control ok for middle class western people and not these literally starving people who just procreate by the look of things. The last thing they need are more mouths to feed. Are they so ignorant as to see that they cannot give those poor children a decent start in life? I've given far more that £5 of aid to them and others during my working life and situtation still remains the same. If it was the UK who would bail us out? It is a continual battle, and I for one am fed up of handing it out all the time. Why are they dying Milvus? They need education in their way of thinking and behaving. Africa is a rich country why are they still begging, other African states seem unwilling and unable to help their fellow countrymen to solve their problems. It's ok handwringing and bleeding hearts about it all, but be practical this a problem that needs tackling now.
