Well let's hope something comes out of it to bring a turn around in this dreadful society that's been created. Agree AoG, should have been done years ago but so should parenting tuition and parents brought to book over out of control children...all goes toward creating a better society but let us see if they stick to their pledges....not holding my breath just in case there are some get out clauses.

Hardly national service, especially as the school-leaving age is shortly to be raised to 18, so I don't see how 16 year olds can be involved. Surprisingly I find myself agreeing with Red Ed "a knee-jerk reaction".

Incidentally, when real National Service was in existence it applied only to young men, not young women.

It's got to be worth a try surely, but the real problem youth will probably slip through the net at first, at least if some scheme is in place it can be always modified in the light of experience later. We can't leave things as they are and hope somehow these problems will disapear.

does just seem like a little summer camp thing but it may be worth a go, it's certainly not worth just writing off.

Oh and as a side note, if this is the only paper you read, I can see why you think all the problems come from black youths! Bloody hell, you can't claim they're sitting on any fence!! A shot of a gang of black lads selling a laptop that must be 10 years old and another of a gang of blacks beating up a white lad!

PPS.. the Mail does offer a nice side selection of scantily clad women to have a nose at before they go on to criticise the media for being too image and celebrity obsessed! Every cloud eh!

I just do not see how extending this scheme is going to have any moderating effect on the culture of youth. There are several problems with it;
1. Its voluntary.
2. Its only a short duration.

Dont get me wrong - nothing at all wrong with youngsters volunteering and contributing to their own community - but how is such a short duration voluntary scheme going to change the "gangsta" culture? I cannot really imagine many of the hooded youths involved in last weeks riots being 1st in the queue to volunteer.

It falls short of what I imagine many people think of as being "national service".For such a scheme to match most peoples idea of what constitutes national service, it would need to be a longer duration - 2 years maybe - and contribute to teaching discipline, self reliance, empathy etc. Problem is that such a scheme would likely be pretty expensive - could we afford it?

Also you need to make it a compulsion that they all wear a uniform so that they are all the same in the service otherwise some I'm sure will be in designer clothes.
