Banning the burkha hasn't happened in France, in law perhaps but in reality no, as one French policeman said, we don't have time to go around fining women for wearing it, catching criminals is our priority. More women take to wearing it i reckon in UK, because of the way it is viewed by the west, even if they are born in UK.
As to lashing, stoning, and any form of punishment, seems barbaric no matter the reason.

They do Sandy, my friend spent a good while in Dubai and went shopping in their very salubrious Malls, a lot of Burka clad ladies frequented the exclusive Lingerie shops, came out with lots of designer labelled bags

Seriously though this isn't about driving.

There has been a bit of a build up of women defying the law and driving in Saudi - normally the police make them sign a pledge not to do it and let them go.

Obviously someone has decided that this civil disobedience has gone far enough and decided to try to set an example.

We will have to see whether this discourages them or whether there is a mass reaction

The Muslim women i see around London certainly wear eye make up, and often you see the jeans/trousers underneath the burkha. And going on how many shop in places like M&S suggest that nice or sexy underwear isn't the preserve of western women.

No, you can't nudgescuffler, but in places where a few years ago the burqa was conspicuous by its absence, it has now become 'uniform' - and that's exactly what it is - a uniform.
