Watching local news recently they've just extended the berths at Felixstowe to accomodate even larger super container ships .
The guy being interviewed said there's loads coming in ,mostly from the far east but very little going out .
Surely we should be looking to our nearest neighbours for trade and business ?
How are we supposed to go it alone when successive governments have killed off all our industries ?

it's too long to print, but it might give you a heads up on how Britain fares in the export market

there was a referendum on joining and people voted to join. You can't hold a referendum on leaving every six weeks unless there looks like overwhelming dissatisfaction, and even the Express couldn't fabricate evidence of that.
It does seem from the figures I linked to that older people would like to leave. Surprise, surprise, ABers are mostly older people too.

This was the one (as I recall) when we voted to go into the Common Market in the first place http://news.bbc.co.uk...d_4586000/4586791.stm
jno, no they are not, as well you know, there is a broad cross section of society on AB, age, race, religion, with subsequent varying points of views. And the same old chestnut comes out the fire that we are all old fogeys, glued to the daily mail, express, being fed a daily diet of let's bash the EU, and much more besides. Many can and do have the ability to make their own minds up, and just because these views might not tally with yours, they are all dim witted.
I couldn't care less about your figures Em .
We still import far more than we export .
Our industries which were once the pride of Britain are all gone .Shipbuilding ,steelworks etc
I would rather stick with the devil I know than the devil I don't .
Come out of the EU and we are on our own .
This isn't the days of the Empire when we ruled half the world and stood alone a la Rule Brittania .
We need our neighbours in Europe .
I voted yes many years ago and I would still vote yes .
But I'm not holding my breath about a referendum .Condems seem to be very adept at making U turns judging from their performance since they've been in government .

I would stay in for the economic reasons.
I asked George Young many years ago what would be the economics of joining NAFTA and become the eastern portal for them for business into the EU and vica versa for the EU into North America. What would the economic figures look like? He could not answer and the question, I think, is still valid.
One of the issues is just how dependent on the EU trade we are - Ireland/Germnay and France - they must equate to way over 35% of our trade.....and we also have to remember that we need to consider invisible services trade too ( that dreaded word, banking, etc) so we are, whether we like it or not entwined.
The UK could not survive alone - we do not have the resources to do so. We need some form of union. I think it would be best for Cameron or whoever to really take a world statesman (a Churchill, Adenaur/de Gaulle leadership role) like hold on the EU and sit down and define what should be at regional level(EU), national level and subregion level, especially if we are starting to see the forecasted break-up of the EU countries into a more States driven model - and by that Scotland followed by perhaps the Basques, Catalans and then Belgium - and some even forecast Italy and Germany fragmenting in time.........
And also to tackle the excesses of the Berlaymont and needless bureaucratic legislation. That really is a major, major challenge for any politican but it is so essential for the future viability of the "alliance" - I had hoped Chris Patten might become President and drive change from within, but alas, he is wasted as Chancellor of Oxford and the BBC Chairman.

I would vote out because that is the only way of breaking the bureaucracy which is stifling us. We need to trade with Europe and they need us even more so, they wouldn't stop trading with us if we left. We were in EFTA ( EUROPEAN FREE TRADE AREA ) which stupid Ted Heath dumped in favour of the Common Market. That was a failure with its butter and wine mountains and massive hand outs to inefficient farmers , especially to the French, and its got worse every year since, but there is no half way house they wont let us opt out of bits of it . Its all or nothing . In or out.
