I quite like those soft edges overlooking the Preston bus station. Does anyone think that a new and somehow more aesthetic bus station would be built instead?

They look pretty grim to me but I guess what people take to their hearts is subjective. I'd be a bit upset if this fella got taken down but I can see why people might think he's slightly unattractive!

I think Preston bus station looks OK considering it's primarily a functional building.

the Dover block looks rather good too, but I presume it's in completely the wrong place, which is always a factor to be taken into account.

But really, what do people think a bus station should look like? Are there rules?

Preston bus station is not only hideous to look at, it isn't fit for purpose and is downright dangerous for bus users.
There are two winding subway tunnels to get out of the station into the city centre, both tunnels are poorly lit, have rarely working CCTV and are usually full of alcoholic beggars and narky buskers. You often find gangs of chavs drinking copious amounts of alcohol in them as well. If you don't want to exit through these tunnels you can try to 'escape' over the bus apron, this is against the rules/advice of the bus station and many have been killed or injured over the years when doing this.

JTH where is that bus station? It reminds me of either Birmingham or Nottingham (can't remember which as it was over 20 years ago I used either).

Preston bus station looks alright from a distance, but it's certainly not what it was. I remember in the 1970's when it was thriving with shops on the concourse and buses in nearly every gate. Now it's just a sad, dirty, smelly building. Only about half the gates (if that) are used, and as daffy says it's a nightmare to get into or out of.

Boxtops, I was fortunate to visit Dover Castle on Saturday, a beautiful day and a most enjoyable visit, but "your" monstrosity certainly ruined the view.

Still it's not all about current aesthetics you have to consider architectural importance too - they might be importantant as part of architectural history.

Then again you can't keep everything and whether or not they can be adapted to modern use is a factor.

That could be tricky with Preston Bus station I'd guess.

Remember it's not that long ago people were distroying lots of Victorian features in houses as fussy impractical old fashioned tat
