The most fantastically ignorant newspaper article of the year?
To summarise - "there was a lot more racism in football 20 years ago, so if black players face racial abuse today, they should put up and shut up":
http://www.dailymail....n-Ferdinand-game.html
Now I know that newspapers tend to publish articles to appeal to their readership demographics - but really...who in their right minds thinks that this is a valid argument?

I am getting really p1ssed off with this racist cr@p.
Would it be the same if a black footballer called a white player a white pudding or other degrading names?
Its getting to the stage in the UK that we have to be very careful what we say and do when we step out of homes theses days.
Its getting ridiculous!!!!!

Agreed SP. Actually, the article wasn't looking too bad, and I was all ready to acccuse you of misrepresenting it - until I got to the final sentence..
// So, Mr Evra and Mr Ferdinand, I know you feel insulted. But perhaps in this case you could just put up with it and get on with the game. //
Incredible.

While not trying to belittle racism, in the Villa v WBA match Hutton dived in with both feet and nearly broke a players leg (or both legs). We see other similar tackles.
A few tut tuts and nothing more is said, but if somone makes a comment about a player, and mentions their skin colour, third world war breaks out.
Seems making a racist comment is the biggest crime you can commit nowadays.

//The papers say Terry called Ferdinand a "f***in black c**t". //
^^ That's abusive, but not because it contains the word 'black'. Fat people are fat, tall people are tall, white people are white, and black people are black. They are facts of life that cannot be denied. By taking offence, you are in effect denying the charge, but why? There's nothing wrong in being black, or white, or fat, or tall, so why take offence if someone describes you as such? I actually think black people are their own worst enemies because by continuing to cry 'racist' at every turn, they give the abuser exactly what he seeks, and so exacerbate the problem. Be offended by real abuse, but not by a factual description. Stand proud and say 'yes, I am black, but I'm not a "f***in c**t". Where is your racist abuser then? You have risen above him - and his only achievement is to confirm to the world that he is a complete and utter numb-brain.

// lot of people in influential positions trying to cover Terrys @rse //
They certainly are. On Monday there were a dozen posts on YouTube clearly showing Terry's abusive tirade at Ferdinand. All the videos have been removed at the request of the FA.

"Would it be the same if a black footballer called a white player a white pudding or other degrading names?"
A...white...pudding???
I would suggest that if a black player indeed used this epithet, whoever was on the receiving would probably say, "Eh? I don't get it...what the hell is a white pudding? Are you calling me a Victoria sponge? They're yellow, surely?

Naomi, I see what you're getting at, it reminds me of South Park the movie where one of Cartman calls Kyle a butt-f***ing Jew (or something like that) the takes it back saying, sorry, that was out of order, you're not a Jew and Kyle replies "No I am a Jew but not a butt-f***ing Jew".. I think you'll have to have seen it to get my point!
But, I don't think it's as simple as that, if someone calls me a f***ing baldy c**t then the intention is to use the baldy as a derogatory term, it is a description of me, I can't deny I'm baldy, but if someone's calling me it in such a manner then it's offensive. As in this case with the use of black. In such a case, it has to be considered a racist verbal attack.

I think we may be getting swayed by semantics. True the player is black, which makes the first part of the abusive statement factually correct - but who breaks down the individual components of a statement when they're being abused? Doesn't bringing someone's race into an otherwise perfectly workable piece of general abuse then make it racist overall?
