I have often on AB laughed off the idea we have an 'Open Door' immigration policy, but apparently, under this shower of a Government, that is exactly what has been happening. Border control have not been bothering to check people entering the country, and the Home Secretary has no idea how many illegals have entered, or if any of them are dangerous.

How is it possible that the Home Secretary can keep her job when this sorry state of affairs happened on her watch? Time for her to do the honourable thing and resign?

Theresa May managed to tear herself away from her summer holiday only after two nights of rioting in August and then her instant reaction was to blame the police for them! Now, re the unchecked aliens, her target is another branch of her of civil service.
On the other hand, several papers have recently pointed out that the Tories are losing the support of many women, so the last thing Cameron will want to do is dump one of the few of these in his cabinet.
You couldn't make this up, really, could you, after their whingeing about Labour's failure to sort this out?
rightwing papers are torn on these issues. On the one hand they want to praise everything the Tories do. They also think slashing government budgets is a good idea. On the other hand they don't want anyone allowed into the country.

The trouble arises at times like this when these noble aims collide. Sacking border officers means there's nobody to keep the immigrants out. Problems, problems.
The fault lays with Government who have placed matters in the hands of an Agency. Same thing as cleaning in hospitals etc....Agencies take short cuts for profit purposes.

If she went, would it be any better with her replacement?

What I don't understand is this business about Border offices having to check digital passports. I went through Gatwick and just went to the booth so it could perform iris definition, didn't see any humans at all.
I don't know if all ports have the iris readers, boxy, they're quite new. I'm also not sure if iris details are actually encoded into digital passports - you have to register separately, as I recall

No, she should not resign, she should be jettisoned off the end of Brighton Pier by Cameron's boot!
jno, mine was all done at the same time, as I recall, when I renewed my last passport.
My goodness Eye....you really were hit with the happy stick. Ever thought about claiming compensation for that?

Nearly got AOG to agree with me...

// Now how can (Theresa May) possibly know that, if she doesn't know how many or who has been let in? //

But no quite.

I have agreed with you before, but you chose to ignore that fact.
Another Conservative Home Secretary being dishonest with the truth ,resulting in the dismissal of a respected former employee of the Prison Service. Her adviser is probably Michael Howard who also dismissed the former Director General of the Prison Service Derek Lewis .
Put it this way; If I as a born and bred British citizen had been abroad and, on returning to some UK airport, had to find myself at the back of a queue of wannabe immigrants into my country, and was forced to wait hours to get back in, I would be far from amused.
jno, the DM is often anti tory, perhaps you should leaf through it once in a while and see, but you won't do that i'm sure. She won't resign, but can see there being a stand up fight over the issue between her and the former border control boss who said he is going to sue the government, whoopdedoo
Yes and take Cameron with her !
Yes, she should. Whether or not the experiment was extended without her knowledge, there should never have been such an experiment in the first place. She has no right to experiment with this nation's security.
naomi, our security is laughable, as to her resigning, it would be a pointless gesture, better for her to get on with the job in hand. Security should be a priority but it isn't and hasn't been for years. If you look back through the Labour administration where you had security staff at key locations, not just at the airport, who hadn't had background checks, some were found to be illegal immigrants, and others had criminal records. How long did Jacqui Smith hold onto the job before being turfed out, for cheating on her expenses claims, and the matter of her husbands porn films, paid for by the taxpayer.
Em, I don't think it would be a pointless gesture. She's failing to do the job properly and therefore she's not fit for office.
that should be applied to all politicians, and if it were, we would have no government, opposition and indeed who would be running the country. If she isn't up to the job, then let Cameron sack her, i don't think she will resign.
But some jobs are higher profile than others - and hers happens to be one of the most vital. I hope he does sack her. She's not to be trusted with the security of this country, that's for sure.
Cameron will not sack her, he has already said she has his full confidence.
