there was never any ruling (or plan for a ruling) about bent or staight bananas.
the rule simply proposed to classify bananas into quality classes, extra class would need to be a "perfect" banana, class1 would be allowed minor defects, class2 bananas would allow any shape at all. I can't see the problem with this, if you don't care what shape your bananas are then you'd buy class2 bananas and they'd be cheaper, if you wanted bananas for a high class hotel then you'd ask for extra class bananas and be sure they'd look nice so you weren't ripped off.
But if people can't be bothered to check facts before spouting of the I guess that's their problem.

There's a nice little wikipedia article on the bent banana story
Whether it's actually a myth or not does depend on your point of view.
The top grade of bananas must not have "abnormal curvature"
http://en.wikipedia.o...ation_(EC)_No_2257/94
Now obviously bananas are normally curved and so the idea that you have to have a straight one to comply is a deliberate misreading intended for mischief making.
But at the same time there is the grain of truth in it.
Of course now the term "straight banana" has enterred the language and means either "excessive EU legislation" or a "Euromyth" purportated for political purposes.
Interesthow the same phrase can have two seperate uses depending on political outlook
