why do we treat people this way
having witnessed the levels of care, or should one say lack of care, why does this happen in our society. And as some have pointed out on AB, we seem to feel more for pets, animals, than our elderly folk.

But having read comments on here and other news web sites over the last couple of days I have not seen very much in support of carers.
On the Sky site yesterday someone even said they were not surprised of the report results because generally carers are of a 'certain class'. How rude is that.
The report has highlighted serious problems and issues that need addressing. Lets hope its sooner rather than later so when asked what my job is I wont get that 'oh your one of them' looks.

samuelcat, my personal experience has been mostly poor to bad. Not just for myself, but relatives and even a few friends. No one said that all carers are bad, but there is a lot that can and should be done about lessening the casual neglect and sometime cruelty towards the elderly, and not just in care homes, but particularly in hospitals. I cite my mothers case as one that i have seen repeated endlessly. I was appalled that after a major operation, she was told if she needed the loo or when a bit better a shower, she would have to manage alone, and if she had a fall, the nursing staff were instructed to call the paramedics. This beggars belief, and if i hadn't seen her every day, and it was a nightmare journey, then i have no idea what might have happened.
Samuelcat, I dint take anything personally, Im also a carer, I also get "the look" when I say I look after old folk, people often assume you must be a second class citizen. I love my work and I will never leave this profession but if I can change things just a little I will. I for one think that "all" genuine carers are great people who get a lot of flack for little financial reward, thankfully we get our rewards from the people we care for.
