Well No Mercy if you don't like your job you know what to do . Resign and get a better job in the private sector ! I bet that's the last thing you will do.
I and my daughters have all worked in the private and public sectors and know full well that most , not all , public service jobs are easier and with far better benefits and pensions. One of my daughters whole department 30 people in all were made redundant. Result ? Nothing ! No one even realised they were no longer there. The work they did was found not to be needed at all. Her department was not the only one affected several hundred other jobs were axed as being not necessary or was picked up by others with a low work load.

There are exceptions , those with special attributes, teachers, accountants etc. but even those usually have to take a pay cut when in the private sector.

modeller - I note you have not attempted to answer my question. Your comments are typical of a serviceman, most of who are very right wing and many of who are anti-civilian. I have been priveleged to work alongside our armed forces for many years but have to say if you are looking for jolly-enjoying skivers the armed forces has more than it's fair share.
sgt Rock I am not a typical serviceman , whatever that is . I was one of a million who spent time around 1945 in the army and were deneid equipment by the militant unions, supported by the Labour Party when they came into power.
Servicemen were not right wing in those days most of us voted Labour in the 45 election. Service pensions were based on long service 18-22yrs. Most retire before the age of 40. Which means that none of those serving today will be affected. Nor will anyone else in the public service who retires within the next 10 years.
. I can believe there are skivers in the forces especially among the long servers and the higher ranks. The reason is not hard to find . What does a peacetime army do ?
And bear in mind, even in war only 1% ever see real front line service.
For most of the army its boring routine. I hated it but thats another story.
I don't know the relevance of your question on servicemen but for what it is worth I think all servicemen who are actively engaged with the enemy should be supported and treated as a special case . for pay ,pensions and medical needs.
Compare that with a teacher colleague of mine who only worked as a teacher for 3 years retired on health grounds and was paid an enhanced pension based on 8 years.
So I spent 8 yrs in the army 20 years in business and 20 years teaching . So I know a bit about working and serving in public and private sectors. and have seen the malign effects of strikes in all three.

I will not be moving over to the private sector - my decision to leave my current post was primarily because of the gruelling daily commute I currently have to endure and because I was only on a fixed term contract, which the majority of new posts are now.
I am going to a permanent but part time post which is literally a stone's throw from my front door.
The only thing I will miss is the lovely team I work with. Two of my colleagues were widowed very young and one is a single mum whose husband did one when her son got Leukemia. Those ladies work their fingers to the bone and none of them can afford to have any more deductions from their pay.

As someone who's worked in the public sector for the last 14 years, the last 4 of them without any sort of pay rise but with increased responsibility for all my team - and with the unspoken culture that extra hours are necessary in order to get the job done - I'd refute that.
Please do bear in mind that not all of us are striking next week, not all of us are unionised - nobody I know is striking and most weren't in the union so can't vote pro or con. I gather that most in the union were either anti, or didn't vote either, so this proposed action is not representative of the rank and file. Most of us are just glad to have a job in the current financial climate. Factor's response about the proposed changes is concise and correct - it's the future which will change, not existing arrangements.

folk working in the public sector work very hard!........I know, did it for many years, and we get paid less, a lot less than the private sector, but we went with security of work and a promised pension!..........why should the present government be allowed to just alter the goal posts at will!............
Job security in the public sector is a myth. As is the so called rich pickings that public sector workers will get in their pensions. People who say that we should count ourselves lucky have no perception of the work done in the public sector and our salaries have never been comparable to the private sector. That's my opinion, and I for one will be striking on 30th November.
