Trt i would be more than happy if the mp's brought out a law where any abuse towards pensioners ended up in a jail sentence, only then will we begin the long road in rebuilding the uk's lack of respect for our elders.
I'm sure that eventually these two will be jailed once found guilty.
Back to the racist lady, yes i was shocked to find she had been jailed.
Yes she needs to be arrested and forced to face the consequences of her actions but i never thought you could be jailed immediately.
Was this the police bowing to the looming public pressure and potential outcry, a sort of "nipping it in the bud" before every media medium screamed for her head?

lots of people get remanded in custody it can be better for some because you have more perks wile on remand
when you do get to court if you get a custodial sentence they take this into account and some will just walk out of court because of being on remand
hope i have wrote it right, i understand it

Rights
Under current law, a defendant has an absolute right to bail if the custody time limits have expired and otherwise ordinarily a right to bail unless there is sufficient reason not to grant it,
Any person accused of committing a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Therefore a person charged with a crime should not be denied freedom unless there is a good reason.
The main reasons for refusing bail are that the defendant is accused of an imprisonable offence and there are substantial grounds for believing that the defendant would:
Abscond
Commit further offences while on bail
Interfere with witnesses
The court should take into account the:
Nature and seriousness of the offence or default (and the probable method of dealing with the defendant for it)
Character, antecedents, associations and community ties of the defendant,
Defendant's bail record, and
Strength of the evidence
The court may also refuse bail:
For the defendant's own protection
Where the defendant is already serving a custodial sentence for another offence
Where the court is satisfied that it has not been practicable to obtain sufficient information
Where the defendant has already absconded in the present proceedings
Where the defendant has been convicted but the court is awaiting a pre-sentence report, other report or inquiry and it would be impracticable to complete the inquiries or make the report without keeping the defendant in custody
Where the defendant is charged with a non-imprisonable offence, has already been released on bail for the offence with which he is now accused, and has been arrested for absconding or breaching bail
Where the accused has previous convictions for certain homicide or sexual offences, the burden of proof is on the defendant to rebut a presumption against bail.
The Criminal Justice Act 2003 amended the Bail Act 1976 restricting the right to bail for adults who tested positive for a Class A drug and refused to be assessed or refused to participate in recommended treatment,
Where a defendant is charged with treason, bail may only be granted by a High Court judge or by the Secretary of State.[8] Section 115 of the Coroners and Justice Act 2009 prohibits magistrates' courts from granting bail in murder cases.
Conditions
Conditions may be applied to the grant of bail, such as living at a particular address or having someone act as surety, if the court considers that this is necessary:
To prevent the defendant absconding
To prevent the defendant committing further offences while on bail
To prevent the defendant interfering with witnesses
For the defendant's own protection (or if he is a child or young person, for his own welfare or in his own interests)[5]

Whether or not she was right in what she did, jailed for shooting one's mouth off, that's absolutely disgusting.
Someone suggested it might have been for her own safety, safety from whom?
I suggest that would have only been from one section of the community, I couldn't see any ordinary member of the public physically abusing anyone after hearing they had once spoke out of turn, no matter what they had said.

AOG, I'd say it would definitely be from more than one section of the community.. unless of course you're bracketting all non-British together, and I know you wouldn't do something like that!
If someone verbally assaulted you, directly, without provocation, based on nothing you had done, continuously and in a particularly foul mouthed way, you'd feel aggreived. Many, many people, albeit wrongly, would seek retribution

Anotheoldgit maybe she might've not needed protecting but her son most definitely did need protecting from this woman.
This alone would've been a good enough reason to throw her behind bars.
Non pc rant? Hatred can lead to violence can lead to serious injury or murder if left to fester.
Nip these idiots in the bud like you would an irritating weed in your garden.

"Maybe at the time, (in this case on the tram), but not day's after when the initial fury had died down."
Anotheoldgit where do live, emerald city or by the yellow brick road?
This is the real world and people will want her guts for garters and her head on a stick.
Anger is not quashed because a few days have gone past and there will be other nutters like herself watching that and becoming enraged everytime they saw it.
If someone published her address on the net do you honestly think that flowers and well wishes cards will be left at her front door?
