Taking into account there's no need for staff, perhaps it could be a way of bringing back smoking into pubs?

i used to work in a nightclub and left work stinking of stale smoke and covered in burns from people not being in control of their cigarettes and i've seen fights break out because someone has burnt a hole in another persons shirt/dress!

having seperate rooms in pubs for smokers is a daft idea! what is the point in going to a pub with your friends or family and sitting in different rooms?

/// In years to come, the very idea of smoking in a restaurant or pub will seem as ludicrous as smoking on tube trains does
now. ///

Never sat in an outside cafe then, to partake in a coffee, a beer or a meal?

Think about all those toxic fumes that are settling onto your food and drink, not to mention those you are breathing in.

I believe London is the most polluted City in the World.

Not sure why you persist in letting us know that there are other forms of pollution. We know that, the smoking ban is mostly to do with the incovenience to others. I don't care how harmless the smoke is, it's the smell I can't stand and the general uncomfortable atmosphere it creates, the stink on my clothes and hair, the reek of the smokers themselves, even when not actually smoking (do they know how bad they smell?). The selfishness, they even gas their own kids in their cars, the down right arrogance. they forced this on themselves, enjoy.
Smokers smell bad - they really do. Even when they go outside to smoke, when they come back in the smell is really horrible. I can't understand how their families put up with it, unless they all smoke. Children I suppose get used to it and don't know any different. I hate it when a smoker is either behind me or in front of me in a supermarket queue - yuk!!
Whats it got to do with smoking?

the no smoking law isnt only in place for staffed places...

besides, there would be staff...aside from security, glass collectors, machine stockers etc... this idea is only to help with queues, not totally replace staff... there would need to be loads of massive machines to serve everyone....imagine the queue behind someone gettin a huge round in?
Looks like this machine would only be able to dispense relatively gasless products such as lagers. I can see it being more trouble than it is worth.

Unfortunately none of the staff in the bars I visit have particularly notable bristols.
why not keep smokers outside and attach a hosepipe to the taps that they can loop into their beer glasses.

that way we won't have to smell their horrible stench or see their yellow fingers and teeth. everyones a winner.
one thing i can't get over is the cigarette ends left by staff and patients outside hospitals. I walked past one woman recently on visiting a friend, and she was hooked up to a drip, and machine, puffing away like crazy and all i could wonder was whether this was why she was in hospital in the first place, utter madness.

haven't exactly travelled anywhere, have you AOG, and certainly not China.

Of the major cities

By the way, latest generation cars emit less pollution than they breathe in. (I have worked in the additive/lubs field for lowering emissions before you try jumping all over that in your quibbling manner)
Absolutely DT. Son took his family to China and was appalled with the cities. Athens was foul last year.

Re the infernal machine, suppose is O.K. for Eurofizz. nuff said.
Shanghai was pretty bad - every week, if you ran your finger across the TV screen, the dust would come off black.

60% of their coal is unscrubbed..........and they are, by far the biggest consumer of the black stuff in the world.
As i recall from my travels Athens was one of the most polluted cities on earth, haven't been to china, but read it has a terrible pollution problem and looks set to get worse, due to it's burgeoning industry and reliance on fossil fuels.
I remember the days when people used to smoke in offices - I worked with two smokers who just could not understand how I found trails of smoke from nub ends, and exhaled smoke, and the smell on my clothes every day, hard to live with. It was only when one of them stopped altogether that she said (with amazement) that she was beginning to realise how unpleasant it was.
And who would do the cleaning, monitor the customers for age, behaviour, collect the glasses, fill the dispenser?
Don't know if Rome ever cleaned it's act up. When I went there it was foul!!
I am told Calcutta is dreadful from a lady who lives there.
Hc, much as i asked way back in the thread. It seems such a daft idea.
The smoking in pubs argument always reminds me of this little ditty I first saw whilst in HM Forces:

Thank you for Not Smoking. Cigarette smoke is the residue of your pleasure. It contaminates the air, pollutes my hair and clothes, not to mention my lungs. This takes place without my consent. I have a pleasure, also. I like a beer now and then. The residue of my pleasure is urine. Would you be annoyed if I stood on a chair and p****d on your head and your clothes without your consent?
The only downside to the smoking ban that I can see is that now people tend to bring their kids into pubs.

That's just not on.

If people are going to bring their kids into pubs, then I should be able to go into primary schools and drink ale.

Fair's fair.
If it came down to a choice between losing a pub for ever or reversing the non-smoking ban, except in eating areas, I would choose the latter.

I speak as a non-smoking pub lover.
