Taking into account there's no need for staff, perhaps it could be a way of bringing back smoking into pubs?

/// The only downside to the smoking ban that I can see is that now people tend to bring their kids into pubs. ///

Must agree with you there, kids yelling, shouting and running everywhere.

How times have altered, when we took our children to a pub, we had to sit outside with them.

Now it is the smokers who have to sit outside.
Not all pubs are 'family friendly' and its lovely to be able to go out for a meal/drink now which I couldn't before because of the smoking ban. Personally I feel unless there is a proper family area then children don't belong in pubs except perhaps for sunday lunchtimes when a family get together seems more appropriate. As for self service pumps why not if you don't mind what you are drinking...makes it easier for real ale fans to get served.
so adult smokers have to sit outside to smoke so that young children and their parents can sit inside ?

oh dear, what an abomination....
Good job times have changed. Children are welcome - no problems with well behaved children and most are. Smokers not welcome. Absolutely ideal for families. Years ago women weren't welcome - yes times have changed - for the better.
My local is very rough.

They have installed a machine that smashes a pint in your face at weekends.
How about pubs that have smoking and those that don't,then you can choose????
How about pubs that allow smoking and those that don't,then you can choose which you want to drink at????
Sorry about the double post but someones smoke got in my eyes!!!!
codswallop. the purpose of the ban is to prevent the activity and its harmful effects.

smoking kills, no matter where it takes place.
Not quite right Ankou.

the purpose of the ban is to prevent its harmful effects on employees.
well yes, but my point was that the law was bought in to prevent the effects (on employees etc etc etc ) and on the grounds of general health, not to give families and smokers a nice pub to go to.
And what pub would you go to if a non smoker was out for a few with a smoker?
Ankou I appreciate what you are saying but people are still finding ways around it,and my reply was a bit tongue in cheek, especially as I'm a non-smoker and a non-drinker.
i still think it was feasible to have designated small areas for those who wish to smoke, when they have done they can go back and join the throng.
The cigarette ends outside our locals are a disgrace, even though there are a number of these ash stands outside, why don't they use them.
I smoke but have no problem with the ban...........I just don't go to pubs anymore.
