Would it had been sexiest as well as homophobic if they had also refused to give a rose to a male partner of a gay diner?

No - because men do not receive flowers as a gift. Traditionally only women are recipients of flowers on Valentines Day.
Pretty stunning behaviour on the part of the restaurant owners. Unnecessarily courting bad publicity to make an invalid point (two people who are in a relationship are by definition 'a couple' - because there's two of 'em).

Sounds like one young member of staff was badly trained and the obvious thing to do was to give every couple a rose if they wanted one. The Manager has admitted as much.
It is not sexist to deny the Lesbians a rose and it would not have been sexist to deny a gay man a rose. But in both cases it would have been discriminatory.
I know you hate it when I say it, but this seems like a non story (Sorry).

What do I know about homosexuality?
I always thought that in a Lesbian partnership, one was 'feminine' and the other 'masculine'.
One regular hears one described as being the 'butch' one, ie short hair, collar and tie, dungarees, and sensible shoes.
So I took it that it was similar with Male gays, one being the 'camp' one, the one that would be delighted to receive a rose maybe, hence the accusation of sexism.
Please forgive me, I am not trying to be offensive here, only ignorant of the true facts maybe?
