It is the usual excuse ''needed to stop serious crime and terrorism'' but once they have the power there will be no way to check why or if it is being used.
At the moment they need the permission of a High court judge to do it and permission can only be granted inexceptiona l cases. Once they get the power to tap phones etc without having to ask anyone it is certain to...

JTP, same idiot analogy of those people killed by terrorists in UK, sorry please do not add any more. As to the government, i know that Labour had a large hand in starting this, and the criticism from the Tories at the time seemed to suggest that they would start dismantling the big brother surveillance ideology. Now we see they have no intention of doing so, but are ramping it up. I can't for the life of me understand why people are so blind to this. Whilst many countries are trying to move towards democracy and freedom of information, we are moving towards a totalitarian state with all speed.
