Morning,

I'm hoping to have a way for us to "quote" one another today.

Questions:

1. How would you like the quotes to look? Italics? Bold? A different colour? All suggestions will be considered.

2. How would you like to implement it? We need a trigger to tell the system "this is a quote". This trigger will be typed before and after the quote so the system to knows where to begin and end. Some options:

{quote}message to be "quoted"{quote}
[Q]message to be "quoted"[Q]
*message to be "quoted"*

It is possible we could put some pretty quote marks around the quote. Who would be in favour of this?

Maybe like this:

Take up too much room.
lighter rather than italic/bold, you don't want the quote outweighing the new post. Maybe a slightly lighter grey than normal type? And pretty quote marks would be a good marker, easy to understand.

I don't know what sort of trigger your system would support but ideally you'd highlight what you'd quoted and click on a tab that says "put this in quotes".
Multiple quotes in a post (quote train) are annoying, this can be solved with spoiler tags in most forums.

>>>In days of yore, it would have been done as above, with no need for anything cleverer.

We could do this, if anyone likes it?
>>> is no better than ///

We could do a background colour to the text, maybe a light grey or similar?
Not bold and not a different colour. Would make the site bitty and a mess.

Just italic in the same font.

Why limit it to just quoting other users. It would just be great to be able to use italics however we liked for titles, emphasis, sayings.

Why not [italic]
The /// quotes are put in by the responder. How will AB be notified it is a quote and change the text accordingly?

I was hoping we'd be able to separate functions based on what a member was trying to do. This would mean you could {quote} something and then explain yourself with [em]emphasis[em].
I know I'm stupid & sorry if I've missed the point, but isn't this about reinstating the ability to <i>italicise</i>, <b>embolden</b> & <u>underline</u> text? (I think that's how they looked?)

Been asking for that for yonks...
Question Author
It is, but as I wrote in reply to Gromit, it would be good to have a way of quoting something and then emphasising in a different way.

Okay, I've worked out the basics. We can now was a proper play and an argument about style.

I'll implement it in a moment, but I've gone for {q}Whatever it is you want to quote{q}

It's italicised and red (although I am certain the red will be dropped).

How does everyone feel about indenting?

To quote myself:

{q}It's italicised and red (although I am certain the red will be dropped).{q}

That's a pain. Back to the testing page....
I was pretty happy with the italise function and was sorry to see it go. I remember other posters liked it and missed it when it went.

I see no need for garish colours and background tints and letter strengths. Just give us back the ability to italise and see how posters develop it.

I seem to remember AOG introduced the //workaround// when italics disappeared. It works well and people have adopted it. It is also an elegant solution. I fear the site could look a mess if you are not careful.

Another Test.
Why have you gone for { } brackets which involve a shift when the [ ] do not?

Certainly might be simpler. How easy is it to find the { and } symbol on an ipad Gromit?
