The only reason he got any applicants for his pathetic job was because unemployed people have to prove evidence they have applied for a certain number of jobs when they sign on. Otherwise no one in their right mind would have applied.

If the wages offered are close to the benefits paid then who would want to take a job with no financial reward. Either the benefits are too high or the wages too low. With housing benefit at £2000/ month maximum what job pays £500/pw. Most countries restrict their benefits to a fixed term and after that they are on their own. Here you can claim benefits for years.
