You've obviously never been on a large ship as boss. That was a tight fit. any collision with either of the piers by a large ship would have resulted in a great amount of damage to both. A piece of good seamanship by both the Royal Navy crew and the tug crews.

I have seen one, think it was The Invincible, she was moored at Greenwich, an almighty ship

the ship is HMS Ocean, carrier of Helicopters and assualt troops and kit. it's berthed at Greenwich for those who want to see (it's quite impressive if you're into that kind of thing) and is there for the Olympics/Jubilee period I believe. Quite a tight fit getting between the pylons of the barrier given the size of the ship I would have thought

the one i saw was a few years back, and sure it was HMS Invincible, would have to dig out the pictures and have a look. But the one in the link is HMS Illustrious.

if youve seen the big north sea ferries leaving hull through the locks (18" either side" and the giant liners going through the panamas canal that's what a tight fit is

I am interested in this by the way, it's fascinating, have been on the HMS Belfast any number of times, and by the way that is small in comparison with these aircraft carriers.

no matter, it's excellent seamanship, and an impressive sight. I visited an American Aircraft carrier in the US, she was in permanent dry dock, not sure if it was the JFK, will have to look it up.

I somehow doubt that a real aircraft carrier could get past Southend pier, the term
" aircraft carrier" must be a word used for any ship that can carry an aircraft or helicopter.
