Referendum for UK re the mebership of EU

There seems to be much speculation amongst all the main political parties that there is a liklihood (yes really) of us being asked if we wish to remain in the EU. Would you wish to have the UK leave the European Union in an organised manner, as is possible, some time soon?

If we ever get the the point of a referendum (O blessed happy day) I look forward to jake the peg batting for the In vote. His post just about sums it up - never mind what we think, it's what the US thinks that counts! This is the same US who were quite happy to see Britain subjugated to Germany until their own selfish interest were attacked.

I remember the original vote as to whether we should join, or not - nobody explained to us at the time that joining the EC at that time would mean we could no longer buy New Zealand Lamb or things from other non-EC countries. I don't know enough about withdrawing now, as to what the implications would be, but I can't see any obvious drawbacks at the moment.

I can't help but wonder why DC and others are dragging their heels about leaving the EU, we dont have the euro thankfully and I'm sure they know the feeling of the electorate by now, so what is the reason for hanging on to a dead expensive duck.

We did not have a vote to join. We had a vote as to whether we should accept the renegotiated terms of membership by the new Labour government who had offered this as a cynical ploy to win the previous general election. Then as now, politicians from all parties were on both sides.

Correct, the referendum was in 1975. Much has changed since then!

mike, I would have thought the US would be more interested in their own affairs rather that what is going on in the EU. Last I heard over 20 states were seeking sovereignty.

The last time that some American states sought sovereignty resulted in a bloody 4 year war. I can't see Washington loosening its grip very soon.

There exists a political party in this country known, in abbreviation, as UKIP. They have existed since the early 1990s. In that time they have fielded candidates for virtually every bi-election and general election going. They have, to date, not returned a single MP to Westminster.

Can any one of you (jake-the-peg exempt) actually work out why this is?

This huge groundswell of public opinion which, allegedly, exists up and down the land and is in favour of our leaving the European Union would surely be massively attractive to any of the mainstream political parties. If you were to believe the nonsense spouted on this thread, you might wonder why the Conservatives or Labour has not written it into their latest policy document. After all, if they did they'd surely win the biggest landslide victory at the next general election that this country has ever seen, wouldn't they?

Come on, then - work it out if you can...

Markrae, I have not been on this site very long. I must say you are the most conceited, condensing person on here. That other people have a different opinion to you does not make them wrong and you right.

Markrae I think you'll find that the UKIP is fastly gaining support. A few conservative mps have defected to them also a vast number of former conservative voters have now joined.

It is my opinion that people tend to carry on voting for one of the three main political parties, when in truth they have all let us down. It's time for something new, lets give someone else a chance. Nigel Farage gets my vote.
