Despite the austerity measures and recession we are still the country most likely to grant asylum to people in genuine danger.

// Some 14,360 immigrants were given asylum within the UK in 2011. The figure was the third successive rise in successful claims in the UK and an increase of 41 per cent since 2008. //

http://www.dailymail....rope-We-let-year.html

// UKIP leader Nigel Farage said: ‘Asylum seekers come to the UK because we have long history of looking after people extremely well in this country.
‘We also speak English, the second language most people are likely to learn whichever part of the world they originate from.
‘But the number of people granted asylum remain a very small percentage of the total number of immigrants coming to Britain.’ //

Why is it that some people are not proud of this fact?

I know someone who lives in All Saints Road. They have to leave their house for a week each year simply to be able to conduct a normall life during "Carnival". And before you ask, they lived there before the Carnival became the blight on the area that it is today.

However, back to the question. The problem with offering asylum is that, like many things in the UK, what are originally laudable ideas very rapidly become hugely abused. However, the small numbers that are granted asylum are but nothing compared to the numbers of people from all over the globe that seek to settle here, placing huge strains on overstretched resources. Yes, we may need a few skilled personnel to run some of our businesses which are not to be found among the home-educated population (largely because of a totally unfit State education system). But the downside of that is that we also import huge numbers of people who cannot or will not contribute to the nation's well-being.
that's a coincidence - I had friends who lived in All Saints Road too. They stayed and enjoyed it.

//Much like all those nasty freeloading jews who came over here trying to get away from that nice man with the little moustache//

"Is he the one who always plays the baddie in the war films"?
you've got no calypso in your soul, aog
i am proud of the genuine cases, NOT the economic migrants!
I'm an economic migrant, so I suppose I will just have to carry on without your approval, cath. It's a torment to my soul, though.
apologies, just distinguishing between the excellent work done by agencies and charities for genuine asylum seekers (as shown by an exhibition at swansea museum last weekend) and the Daily Mailesque 'influx' of migrant workers who aparently ALSO attempt to come in on this pretext!
Cheer up - at least you haven't got Alf Garnett in your family tree.

Its not the immigrants with the moustaches I worry about, its those with straggly beards that cause all the strife. Nothing to do with Islam of course!
Billy Connolly?
I just *knew* this would be a magnet for AB's small collection of fascists: AOG, New Judge - but where is Youngbog and R1 Geezer* ?
(*In his latest incarnation)
From AOG:

...except that one. LOL
"not proud but ashamed that successive governments have and are destroying
this country, with their immigration policies and there lack of backbone to deport"
Are you talking about English people in Wales ?
Will I do as a stand-in fascist? I'm afraid I'm a very mild one - more korma than vindaloo.
AOG: "That may well be so, but the comparison was being drawn between the Notting Hill Carnival and one consisting entirely of morris dancers".
Not by me it wasn't.
I can only imagine your friends in All Saints Road do not have to get up for work in the morning, jno. Alas my friends do and sleep during “Carnival” is impossible.

It’s strange to be labelled a Fascist just because I object to my nation being reduced to a doss house and dumping ground for the dregs of the world. Even more so when you consider the cost of supporting such people when the nation is effectively skint. Still, there’s nowt so queer as folk. I only wish they’d pay for their predilections and not expect me to do so.
In the mid 19th Century a lot of starving Irish came because of the famine. Later it was Jews fleeing the pogroms of Tzarist Russia who settled and made a new life here. Both these groups have added much to the culture and prosperity of the UK.
The UK should be very proud that people fleeing for their lives can find a safe refuge here.
New Fascist: "It’s strange to be labelled a Fascist just because I object to my nation being reduced to a doss house and dumping ground for the dregs of the world".
Terms like "my nation" and "dregs" (referring to people) say it all IMO.
I question your assumed authoritarian stance and matching abattoir - I mean avatar ...m'lud!
