"There were many women during the 17th century that were tried and executed as witches. The last great witch hunt was in 1660 and between 1661 and 1663 saw 9 women from Forfar being executed as being witches. All of these women were accused by Helen Guthrie.
Helen Guthrie was and evil woman, who killed her own half sister when they were children.
Helen and her friends soon got a reputation for dancing drunkenly in the churchyard at midnight. She became a "supergrass" when she assisted in the witch hunt campaign by giving evidence against her friends.
In 1663 Helen Guthrie was a self confessed murderer and witch thus leading to her being tried and executed. In Scottish Tradition, Helen was strangled and her body was burned to ashes in a barrel of tar.
Helen had a 13 year old daughter, Janet, who was also accused of witchcraft.
To this day, the fate of Helen's daughter is still unknown, but she was still imprisoned in tolbooth in 1666 without a trial."
