Is he a peadophile though? Or was he a groomer?

Were they pre-pubescent girls?
if the police were unable to find sufficient evidence against him (for whatever reason) you can hardly blame the BBC for being unable to do so.
ummmm, the lowest age I've seen mentioned is 12. I don't think he was grooming them for future abuse, he was, allegedly, abusing them there and then; but I don't think he was a padeophile.
and i did read some of that thread, it makes for unedifying reading.
Hard to say.

Some 12 year olds look much older (and its not nowadays, it's always happened)

This might sound horrible...but...he's ugly, there must have been some grooming involved.
I suspect fame outweighs ugliness
At least a child molester?
Mick MJ left 3 kids, none whom made similar accusations.
if the allegations are true - yes, but not "child" in the paedophile sense. Paedophiles seek out prepubescent children, and 12-year-olds probably aren't in that range.
I agree, jno. They weren't little girls...but
Good comparison, joeluke, though I think Savile was more into slightly older girls while Jackson also didn't even seem to care what sex they were.....

Very interesting the point that his charity work may have been at least partly motivated by guilt. Conversely, did he choose charity work involving children so he could get access to them and justify it? Interesting too how many people - including his friends and family - won't accept he did anything of this nature because A) he did so much great work for charity, and B) no proper claims were made in his lifetime. re A) what someone does for a living has no bearing whatsoever on what they're really like as a person and what they do in private. re B) the big problem was that none of his alleged offences were recorded (there was much less suitable technology in those days) and without serious evidence no-one could come forward and make such claims against someone like Savile who could afford the best lawyers.
I think he did all his charity work to keep himself in the limelight and on TV.
And maybe also as a smokescreen?
Maybe, but I'd opt for the fact that they realised that TOTP's and kids TV are more successful with good looking people. He wasn't good looking, so he ran marathons instead. He didn't want to be a 'has been'...and I thought that before these allegations.
Just read the two page article and it is quite sinister. The programme could be interesting.

Not that this has any bearing on the allegations, but I believe he cheated when running marathons. I used to run regularly, about three and a half stone ago, and in the Glasgow half marathon I passed Jimmy and his entourage fairly early on. At about the ten or eleven mile mark I overtook him again, and he had barely broken sweat.
interesting, but I'd have thought one of the side effects of fame and a wacko appearance would be that it's very difficult to be smuggled out of a marathon and back in again? Someone would have to notice
Jimmy lives his life for charity
Jimmy's got no wife just his little girls three.
Everybody depends on Jimmy
Jimmy's getting a little cheesed off
Jimmy reckons they've all enough
If they want Jim he's hard and tough
CHORUS:
Coz when you're Jimmy Saville
Everybody thinks yer brill
Think yer brill
But Jim'll Fix It's to be done

Then that bleedin' Great North Run
The Great North Run
No it's never much sexual fun for James
Jimmy does get it up at 4:30
But Jimmy does get time for being dirty
He's not complaining, Jimmy's training
Somebody's sponsoring Jimmy again
So Jimmy bites his tongue & counts to ten
"Oh feck this" Jimmy snarls
Coz when you're Jimmy Saville...
For James there's no time off, Jimmy's in some girl deep
For James there ain't no sleep
(guitar bit)
When you're...
Jimmy, Jimmy Saville oo oo Jimmy Saville
Jimmy Saville
Howza 'bout that then young guys & gals
I'm Jimmy, your special pal
Sadly there are very sick young girls who love to make up allegations about a man (for all kinds of reason) I know two who did just that and completely ruined people's lives and seemed to think it was amusing ............... however in this JS case we have to keep an open mind, but I feel so sorry for his family, as he can't defend himself.
But it isn't just very sick young girls who love to make up allegations is it Ann as you will have seen if you have read what has been said on this thread. Why would Paul Gambuccini be making it up for instance? And the other guy who was on the news with him. It was even said on the news this evening that he had admitted it but he thought he was untouchable. It seems he was right.
