As far as I can see, the family have no claim against the Australian station or the DJs (although someone far more experienced than me could correct me on this - but I don't see any claim under the Fatal Accidents Act or under negligence - no duty of care, no foreseeability, causation issues).
Thus the best the family have is a moral claim. The money will not bring the mother back; it will not heal the wounds; but it may help life for the children easier when they have lost the person who may have paid for their education.
If the mother had been killed in a road traffic accident as a result of someone's negligence, would they be wrong to accept the money?! No. And they would be right to fight for compensation.

Are we not missing the story - surely the fund is for people to donate to, it's not all coming from the radio station itself (or am I wrong)?
Tambo, people at the point of suicide don't think like that, all they can think of is that the world is not worth staying in and that people would be better off without them.

Now they're saying she was alive when they found her. They must have been moments from being able to help her.

I haven't read all the posts on this thread, but why are they giving out this money, there has not been an inquest into her death yet, so none knows or may never know why she took her own life?
Some victims have to go through a lengthy and expensive law suit to sue their wrong doers, why is this family being handed a cash sum on a plate?
And I don't wish to sound unsympathetic to the family when I put this, as this has been a tragic case of a Wife and Mother taking her life for whatever reason, round about the time of a practical prank.
