It seems to be the done thing with this government to build bigger institutions so they can close the smaller ones. A&Es are another example. However we know that big is not always beautiful as witnessed by the large comprehensives, the big tower blocks for council tenants and also large container lorries which leave dents in the road due to the extra weight.
I suppose the theory is that less staff will be required and the economies of scale.
You can imagine the uproar when people realise the new prison is to be built in their neighbourhood. Personally I think with the number of small islands round the UK they could buid many Alcatraz's.
