//Why is all this food being destroyed? What a disgusting waste, there's nothing wrong with it. Why not just sell it off cheap. I would buy it because I am not one of those namby pamby idiots who will turn their nose up at anything without even trying it. Or even donate it to the starving of the world. //

Your'e welcome to it all mate .

I'll also come and watch you running in the 2.30 at ascot
The issue is one of deception. A lot of people in the world eat horsemeat.(I am vegetarian so I wouldn't buy beef lasagne anyway). The real issue here is that we are all eating ready meals and products that are basically lying about their contents. We are trusting supermarkets and companies with what is written on the packaging claims and more lies are being discovered. There are a lot of people upset because they do not want to eat horse, and I would be upset if , for instance a ready-meal contained something I was intolerant or even allergic to! The trust is gone and someone should be made accountable.
I still do not understand the point of the last 2 posts. This is not a specific issues about the safety of the horse meat - plenty here have acknowledged that horsemeat might actually represent healthier alternative to beef - it is an issue of deception.

Supermarkets and manufacturers are obliged to inform the consumer of the contents of their foods, particularly processed foods - and that is a good thing, because that allows the consumer to make an informed choice. And such manufacturers and retailers usually charge a premium for "pure" food - like cod fish fingers, or 100% beef - so adulterating the beef with meat from other animals is all about deception and fraud.

Given we have a global supply chain, and given that there are unethical and criminal elements always looking to make money, we need to tighten up the testing of source material, to offer provenance and consumer assurance.

This is not just about an "eww" factor. This is about ethical business practice, consumer rights and ensuring the material entering the food chain for human consumption is of the appropriate standard and is what it says it is....
Er -I thought rigorous checks were carried out on All processed foods, didn't you ?
That is the issue,Brionin..and Lazygun has confirmed my previous more eloquently. We do not know what we are eating,we cannot believe what it says on the packet and this is the worry.
LG is correct, horsemeat is of itself a perfectly fit food. however as some news agencies have highlighted, if criminality is involved in this, there's a chance that what would otherwise make good eating could be contaminated by phenylbutazone, administered by vets to domestic horses.
and as we have seen with other products that get contaminated, it can cause serious illnesses in humans, the companies involved should be prosecuted and shut down where possible. If it's criminal gangs, caught and sent to prison.
It's not beef

It's not horsemeat

It's Soylent Green
Good movie that, Soylent Green....
Question Author
I agree with both of you very good film Soylent Green which I saw many years ago,but hopefully it will never come to that but with population explosion and shortage of food who knows!!!
Talking of movies, I guess this all gives a new take to the movie Sea Biscuit.

Apart from the additive issue.....(that's serious), horsemeat is far better for humans as it is far lower in fat, to the point it almost needs barding à la pheasant etc. As many have said, the real issues are trades and description and the lack of monitoring.
Question Author
Dtc another very good film, what came to mind when you mentioned that was little sea-horses lol!!!
Question Author
I have seen a chef cooking this "delicacy" on tv before Dtc but it does not appeal to me,recently I also saw the "meat" of the future made in science labs constructed from various insects and goodness knows what else, makes me wonder why we are all so worried at the moment, incidentally I don't think there would be much eating in a sea-horse anyway!!
the one that I could never come to grips with in China was turtle o-rings, they looked like cooked rubber and tasted like it. To the locals, it's a texture thing....
Question Author
Criminal conspiracy-We will have to be vegetarian, they certainly will not destroy all meat products!!
Insects do represent a huge and currently largely untapped reservoir of high grade protein.

Not sure the thought appeals, but they would definitely represent a good source of nutrition :)
