prob get horses from eastern europe that are cheap enough to make it worth while
I have just hear on the news that due to European Union rules it is almost impossible to ban imports of processed beef into this country unless there is a definite health concern. There the obvious answer is not to purchase any processed beef. Buy British from your local butcher,(if you can find one), at least then you can be sure of what you are getting
Did you also hear that Horse meat butchered in the UK is being exported to Europe ?
just been to Corals to order burgers for my next barbie.
We veggies aren't immune to healthscares re food, and I'm not looking at this smuggly. If we can't trust what they claim to be in food products we are just as vulnerable.Rememer the egg salmonella scares? As for buying British, that certainly isn't an answer(Mad Cow disease?), and it isn't just ready meals we have to be concerned about. Even vegetables and weird pesticides-nothing is safe. I must go on an organic apple diet!
@Ganesh I would agree with you that the provenance of the ingredients used within our food chain are important to all, not just those who eat meat. Leaving it to the industry is a ridiculous strategy, and lends itself to fraud and corruption to maximise profit.

I would disagree on the point you make about British Beef though - Beef produced in the UK is tightlu regulated, because of the BSE crisis, and the authentication and testing much more robust - so consumers can have a lot more confidence that there has been no adulteration.

As consumers, we should all be entitled to have confidence in the provenance of our food sources and are free from adulteration with potentially hazardous substitutes ; The manufacturers and retailers owe us that much, but some seem perfectly willing to embark on fraud to make a profit.
