No doubt about it, if we did what labour want we would all be in the dark smelly stuff for decades to come. But at some point we will need to invest in the country and investing in infrastructure is clearly the best way (If only labour had done that instead of 5 a day co ordinators and the other 800 000 pinko non-jobs it created).
So when will the time be right? And when it comes will we hear howls of 'U-Turn' from the left (even though after this time it would hardly be a u-turn).
In fact are the Labour partly responsible for a rigid stance because of their attitude and howling if fiscal poicy is adjusted?

Surely, the longer a policy is adhered to, the more dramatic a 'u turn' it is
/800 000 pinko non-jobs/ yeah including all those damned pinko nursing and police jobs
ymb - perhaps your posts would be taken more seriously if you cut out the childish, rather old fashioned and frankly, meaningless clichés and silly names?

Are you giddy - that's an impressive piece of spin!
The Labour party have been going for Keynesian investment and the Tories are continuing to follow the 'cut your way out' economics that failed in the 80s and the 90s
Don't get me wrong I'm glad you're coming around but I'm sure Cameron isn't sticking to his guns because he's frightened of the names Labour will call him!
Actually i think a number of Tories were secretly delighted to come to power in a financial crisis - they are ideologically devoted to a small state in the American fashion.
The financial crisis gave them every excuse to shrink the state as much as they liked and blame 'the previous Labour Government'
Only it's not worked has it?
They were gambling on the Private sector picking up the slack but the lack of bank investment (yes I know they've been set recapitalisation requirements and it's not all their fault) and crucially confidence has totally scuppered things.
We now have a poorly performing Private sector, a shrinking public sector
you might say we're facing distaster and Cameron is pressing forward.
How much more disaster can they bring in 2 years?

Is DC extending Thatcherism ? The economy is in the doldrums, the armed forces are gradually being demolished ( the T/A to be deployed for policing in Cyprus). Hospitals are being closed instead of being allowed to do what they are designed for ( look after the sick) out of work youngsters being asked to work for nothing in the private sector shops instead of proper jobs being created for them. I can wellremember when we manufactured steel in Sheffield, built ships on the Clyde, mined coal in South Wales& Yorkshire, & what are we now ? A satellite of the EU. Oh how I mourn for my beloved country.

Lets see Baz who's decided what is a non-job?
Oh what a surprise our vey own Tea party 'The Tax-payers Alliance'
We'll they're a reliable source aren't they?
2 out of 3 of their staff were Tory politicians or advisors to them.
What shock News next the Fabian Society think the Tories are doing a bad job?

I think Baz was referring to this
http:// www.tel egraph. co.uk/n ews/ukn ews/518 1941/Co uncil-n on-jobs -like-t oothbru sh-advi ser-cos t-milli ons-eve ry-year .html
it actually quotes £800,000 not jobs - but then The Torygraph has rounded up the headline to 'Millions'
And as noted it's actually just propaganda from the 'Taxpayers alliance'
That's like asking the Fabian society to comment on which of Camerons policies are a waste of money

FRom your beloved BBC
The number of people out of work fell by 14,000 to 2.5 million in the three months to December, according to the Office for National Statistics.
And I always love this one:
//t might still be an exaggeration though, as many of those 800,000 were no doubt delivering some sort of service and at the very least were paying taxes and spending money rather than drawing benefits. //
Economically, bearing in mind the country functioned perfectly well before they came along- hence non jobs, we would have been far better off paying them benefits. Paying out 50K a year for a 5 a day co ordinator is far more than benefits (Unless you are a foreign immigrant with a horde of kids of course)
Jake I am not coming round, I just appreciate at some point we will need to invest. I dont think anyone who has mor than half a brain would think we would never invest.
If they had not trimmed the cloth we would really be in it. Part of the problem is that the liberals have held back. What was needed was deep and quick measures. Short term pain for long term gain.
Whiskey, I wish he would (but lets not forget the cause of the UK's problem; Brown and Blair.

/Paying out 50K a year for a 5 a day co ordinator is far more than benefits/
Apart from the fact that I didn't say whether a '5 a day coordinator' was a 'useful service' or not ...
£50,000 salary = £15,000 goes straight back in tax/ni
plus Council Tax
plus mortgage repayments
plus utility payments
i.e. not funded by benefits
what's left goes back into the economy
