This was under discussion on LBC radio's phone in early this morning, and everyone who telephoned or text the radio station, said that they would if they could afford it.
If that is a fair section of the population, it is most frightening, and surprise, surprise most if not all blamed the immigration policies of the last Labour Government, and that the possibility of Labour getting into power at the next election is far too frightening to contemplate.

/// You have run down this country everyday on here for the past 7 years. Maybe it is time to acknowledge we have not gone to the dogs, and post some good things about our country. ///
Every day for the past 7 years???? That's a bit of a over generalisation Gromit.
But let's see, as I look out of my window it is snowing, we have had two terrible summers, England is almost a word of the past, there are far too many immigrants, there is unemployment, lack of affordable housing, not enough schools providing a reasonable enough education, a deteriorating health service, our elderly are treated deplorably, there have been two more stabbings in London over the weekend with a young girl stabbed to death on a bus on her way to school recently, it is becoming less safe on our streets,
I could go on but I would think you have got the point.
But on the plus side, we are still managing to hang on to our Royal Family, our ancient buildings, our culture (just) and the English country side is still beautiful, and oh, the sun has just started to shine once more.

i am constantly saying to friends, relatives & on this site that we once lived in a GREAT Brittain when we had a steel industry, ship building industry stocks of coal ( some of which is still lying there underground) we were in other words a manufacturing country with excellent exporting capabilities. How many of you agree with me that it would now appear that we are a satellite of the EU, our government incapable of making decisions for us without the o.k from Europe.
So yes I think that Britain has gone to the dogs.

/// What is funny is thought that people are so fed up with immigration that they would ... emigrate. I wonder if Bulgaria's version of The Daily Express is flexing its presses for a major scare story :-) ///
"Flexing its presses for a major scare story" I would hardly think so, due to the fact that if some British did decide to emigrate to Bulgaria, it would only be a good thing for their government and it's population, seeing that those immgrants would not be a burden on their state since they would bring with them enough means so as to provide for themselves and in turn also make a contribution to their ecomony.

Hmm...
My country produces some of the best music in the world. We hosted what is popularly regarded as the Olympics in years. We have a world class health service which is the envy of the western world (yes, really) and we have a royal family which survived major wobbles in the 90s.
The city of London is still financial powerhouse, only rivalled by New York, culturally and artistically, the world still pays keen attention to British artists, designers and architects.
Yes, there is much to complain about - but what is the use of grizzling all the time?
What does it achieve?
Not much.

/// Was the hot radio debate about Britain going to the dogs or taxes (or a combination of both)? ///
It was started by the Ray Winstone story of him thinking of leaving because of the high taxes, and the presenter widened the debate by asking listeners why they think that Britain is becoming so bad that some wish to leave.

Oh dear is the white middle class previous generation unhappy with what they have created?
I think you should be ashamed of yourselves, this country has educated, cared for, protected and provided for you your whole life and now as you reach the end of your days you look around and declare it all terrible - what more did you want / expect / need?
Nowhere is perfect but the UK is an amazing country and we should all try to get behind that and improve things more instead of constantly harping on about a golden time of honey and milk that actually never really existed for the majority of people.
Be brave - back the UK

/// "England is almost a word of the past" ///

Hear it mentioned much do you? It is mainly called Briton, and we are British or Brits, Europe doesn't recognise us as such, we are down on their map as regions just as Prescott planned, we are not given a choice on official forms ie White British, and even our country's flag is frowned upon by some.

I hear 'England' mentioned all the time. Maybe I'm just out of step on this one, but I was under the impression that England *is* just a region of the UK and not a country in its own right and has been for some time (in the same way that Holland is a region of the Netherlands).
Personally I whince a little when (for instance) I hear Americans refer to 'England' when they mean the UK as a whole. I don't really see how that diminishes England as an entity, or robs it of its history.

JTP. i wouldn't hold a candle too close to the USA, over 40 millions Americans who don't have health insurance, not to mention the millions who are now in abject poverty, yeah that really works for me. And a policy of invasion that leaves one wondering what country will they try and stomp on next, not a great comparison by any stretch of the imagination. We may not be a big hitter these days, and yes we have loads of problems, not least the stooges that current run Britain, and that includes the fools in the Labour party, totally interchangeable..
but i know where i would rather live, and it isn't in the USA. I think you need some reality checks there, if you think they won't be dumped out of the race any day soon as a super power, that will be China, they have more people, a better work ethic, and a somewhat bigger army. Money talks and much of theirs isn't tied up in foreign banks.
