Perhaps they should, but nobody should expect this sort of treatment - if they were unprepared, they were stupid but I wouldn't say the rape was "their fault".

What would the 'SP' do with the information? If they said "Don't go there !", that would be useful, but otherwise it's not going to help anyone. The minister does not suggest how giving travel plans saves the woman from being raped , or worse.

No. Sad state of affairs when the police blame the victims of a crime, especially for a crime as repugnant as rape. Pretty sad state of affairs that you have to own up to being unable to adequately police a territory, one that is, apparently, an acknowledged haven for bandits.

Coming on the back of that recent horrible incident on the bus, the Indian justice and police system is looking pretty shaky at the moment....

Well if those are the rules, then yes they should inform them. It may well have been the SP would say dont stop there and it would not therefore have happened.

It is not good all sitting here in the West expecting other continents to have the same values that we do. It is simply not going to be the case.

I am sure that India as one of the emerging economies will start to address the problems, but India is a vast place with a huge population and many uneducated people. It wont happen overnight, until then follow the rules or you dont really have a leg to stand on.

I know that in France there are certain rules for motorists, and you can look these up - but if you go to the India travel advice page on the Foreign and Commonwealth Office website, there's nothing specific about checking in with the local SP when staying in India.

The couple cannot be held accountable for this crime.

Can't vouch for the other countries but I would think the UK is perfectly safe for tourists, some are too busy attacking and raping their own kind.

You have got to admit some parts of the world are now getting more dangerous for foreigners.

If you put a search into Google for 'British tourist murdered in', you only get five results.

Five murdered British tourists is five too many.

Do you think on reflection, that it might be quite rare, seeing as five murders as a percentage of all the families that go abroad every year is 'statistically insignificant'.

I can't remember reading many reports of 'tourist raping sprees' recently? Surely those who come to the UK would want to spend their time visiting attractions, rather than going for an evening of raping?
