Can Churchill's funeral be used as a precedent?

Is there a danger of re-opening old wounds?

By the way - I don't even know whether it's being considered yet!

no, but for what it's worth i admired her.
and they have already said she won't be accorded a state funeral.
Apparently it was all discussed prior with Baroness T and her family

State Funeral no thanks

Ceremonial Funeral then private cremation Yes

Does anyone know what the criteria are for either of the above?

Is it anything to do with being a 'Wartime Leader'?
from BBC website

She will not have a state funeral but will be accorded the same status as Princess Diana and the Queen Mother.

The ceremony, with full military honours, will take place at London's St Paul's Cathedral.
State - for Monarchs, Princes of the Realm and those UK citizens who have give exceptional service to the UK. Family have the right to say no, as Disraeli's and Mightingale's did.

Ceremonial - rare event that can be accorded by the Monarch, with military honours, well she was PM, though not Field Marshall, Lord Admiral etc, she had her linkage with the Falklands I guess.

People forget that it wasn't just the Labour administrations of the 70s who failed to control the unions.

Remember Heath?

He was humiliated by union bosses too!
I think she is deserving of the Ceremonial funeral, but sadly it will be marred by the usual rag tag army of professional demonstrators.
After the good she did for this Country I see now reason why not.
Not concerned what style of funeral there is but I am disappointed that we're not getting a day off!
Baldric...........I can think of 3million reasons why not!

craft1948 - just to play devil's advocate for a moment, could it not be argued that a ceremony honouring such a divisive politician is a bit of a red rag?

Diana's funeral didn't attract the same level of controversy, and neither did the Queen Mother's - but wherever your politics are, surely we all have to acknowledge that more than any other politician in living memory - Baroness Thatcher was seriously...'Marmite'?
they have already said why not, they were her wishes, i don't suppose the powers that be want it either, imagine how it would look, a riot in the middle of a state funeral, the rent a mob baying for blood or at least a change of government, no thanks.

No......not now................
this may sound rather rude, but my OH has arrived home with some jack daniels and bacardi and demanded a celebratory drink which ended in the bedroom, sod it it's out there and i'm not ashamed lol
Ah, DJ, making sure that Mrs T goes out with a bang.
Will the selected Crematorium become a place of 'Leftie' pilgrimage?

//Is it anything to do with being a 'Wartime Leader'? //
No not in the sense of us as a country being at war with another country
as in WWII.

What marks Maggie out as a leader was :
1. Standing up to the Russians, that's why they called her the iron lady.
2. Standing up for Britain in Europe.
3. Standing up for the Brits in the Falklands and winning
4. Standing up to the Unions and the likes of Scargill.
5. Standing up to the wets in her own party who would have given in to the unions and Brussels as Labour wanted to and did under Blair.
6. She was respected throughout the world as a leader that's more than you can say about the present lot.
agreed ^^
Yes, I believe so. My overriding memories of her are the day after the Grand Hotel bombing, it was business as usual for her and how she spoke after the death of Airey Neave.

Have a heart, she was an elderly lady in not good health. I feel sorry for her daughter.
