Can Churchill's funeral be used as a precedent?

Is there a danger of re-opening old wounds?

By the way - I don't even know whether it's being considered yet!

Godwins law does not refer to merely mentioning hitler or nazis as a comparison, or to emphasise a point - it is when someone is arguing and is becoming so irate and outraged at the views of the other person, they resort to calling their opponent a nazi or saying they are worse than hitler etc, instead of tackling directly the comments made.
I see where you're coming from sp but what is the alternative, not to have a public funeral to celebrate her life and works?
Surely that would be giving in to the rabble rousers......
they have already said what type of funeral it will be, this must have been agreed with all parties concerned, primarily Mrs T. Personally it shouldn't be a state funeral, whilst i thought she was one of our best PM's, it doesn't warrant that. Churchill was a one off, there never was or never will be another like him.
Modeller

with respect, all those are subjective opinions

I was wondering what (if any) objective criteria there are for deciding 'grade' of funeral
SP // Remember Heath? He was humiliated by union bosses too! // Absolutely! Queer . Nasty sulky little man .
He hated Maggie because he failed where she had succeeded.
Heath queer? I once asked a senior Tory MP who replied "No, not homosexual, I think. It was just that he was asexual; he didn't like sex!" So there you have it. LOL
Heath used to get his jacks off over pictures in Yachting Monthly - "Oh. she's got a nice bottom...."
So it has been decided. Her coffin will be carried on gun carriage and the representatives of all three armed forces will be in parade.

What a sickening waste of money.

Cameron calls her the patriot prime minister and that she saved our country. He is certainly not following in her footsteps.
no he isn't, but then again, he is shackled somewhat by a completely different set of rules and regulations, not to mention that ankle biter Nick Clegg.
Glad you see her as being a patriotic Prime Minister, sir.p

I see that you are for turning...........good on you.
There will be people from the mining communities that she destroyed who will be planning street parties
I don't think you can say Churchill's funeral set a precedent for Margaret Thatcher having a state funeral. Churchill saved the UK from becoming part of the Third Reich, Margaret Thatcher never came close to anything so important or heroic, however much you might compare the Falklands War to World War II. She was divisive where Churchill brought the nation together. Give her a nice funeral, acknowledge her time in office but don't turn it into a Tory lovers circus, which will only cause more grief and angst for her family as I think that will sit very badly with a lot of people even 23 years after her departure from office.
no.....absolutely not. a hideous woman who shamed her sex. she tore this country apart.
I've been listening to an endless things my OH hated her for, many of which I had forgotten about, Poll Tax was the main one i had forgotten about, I was an activist back then and stood up for stay at home mums with no earnings that were being charged poll tax. I was on the front page of the local rag.
a hideous woman who shamed her sex[I

A slightly different viewpoint to Obama then.....

]She stands as an example to our daughters that there is no glass ceiling that can’t be shattered[I]

strange that those who hated the poll tax, got landed with the council tax, which as it seems to have turned out, is a damned sight more than what was paid before.
And we thought that you had been on Page 3, Dottie..........
Shari....uniting a nation in peacetime is a different "ball game" than uniting a nation in war each one needing differing solutuins.

Yes, Churchill did unite the nation against the 3rd Reich, but the electorate showed it's gratitude by kicking him out at the next election.

Baroness Thatcher had a much bigger task in setting the UK on a firm economic footing, much against the wishes of the Unions who, at that time were very powerful.

I think Churchill probably had an easier task in many ways than Baroness Thatcher.
And given that the country was really going to the dogs economically and socially, a bit like inheriting the legacy of Blair/Brown/Balls and the Millibands et al, the country not quite so devoid of cash though. (Just)
Yes, poll tax was a disaster, and annoyed some Tory voters. My late mother thought it so unjust that her gardener was being charged per head on his household that she paid it all for him. She, living alone and fairly well- off, was paying less than he was! When a lifelong Tory voter thought that way, the Party was in trouble.
