Many have criticised the fact that Baroness Thatcher is to receive a Military Procession funeral, I wonder what the reaction would have been if she had also been further honoured by having her image on a postage stamp, at least she would have been more fitting alongside other British famous faces, than a Mr John Archer?

Never heard of mesdames Rathbone and James, but Barbara Castle was a Minister of Transport once (inter alia). If her image was put on a stamp, there's hope for a Lady Thatcher stamp yet.

Ah, Cigarette Cards now that's a subject on it's own, I wonder how many of those sets would be deemed "not quite political correct" these days, especially those dealing with the British Empire?
But to get back to the cards themselves, I personally liked the Senior Service ones, these were mainly real photograph, aerial views etc.

Yes. And it should be recognised.
The first black President was significant.
The first blind Home Secretary was significant.
The first openly gay footballer was significant.
They are all firsts...
Firsts are significant.

/// the only thing i've noticed on stamps these days is the missing price ... probably because there isn't room ///
Yes the 60p Gold hasn't the same ring as the One Penny Black.
But actually you are wrong regarding the price missing from today's stamps, I received a package the other day and one stamp that stuck out from the other 1st class and 2nd class stamps was one with 5p printed on it.

Yes - you've hit the nail on the head. The barriers are fast coming down...for instance, no-one would bat an eye if Theresa May were to become the leader of the Conservative Party, but back in 1975 it was groundbreaking.
AOG - are you seriously suggesting that it's not noted when Asians reach significant office in the UK?
Really?

/// The first openly gay footballer was significant. ///
Now let me think......................................no his or her name completely escapes me. //
Mine too, sadly, but in a sport were homosexuality is still a target for insult and exclusion, the fact that someone can be openly gay in that is very significant indeed.
I can remember one or two openly gay rugby players, e.g. Gareth Thomas.]
Actually, is there an openly gay footballer yet? Apparently there are none in the top four divisions currently.
The first one to come out that I can find, Justin Fashanu, committed suicide at the age of 37. It does matter.

I can never remember any being on postage stamps..
And can you ever remember it announced from the roof tops of Shreela Flather, Baroness Flather, being the first Asian woman to receive a peerage?

I'm not really sure of your point. How many people recognise the name of Emmey Noether, or Paul Dirac? People who've had a huge influence on modern life - but it wasn't necessarily appreciated at the time or even today for that matter. Noether particularly was important, one of the top mathematicians and also a woman. Continually denied professorships and university offices, though, purely because she was a woman.
It still matters, even if the man in the street doesn't appreciate it.

Are you serious?
I'm surprised that someone who take such an interest in news, and especially news about gay issues (judging by your posts this year) doesn't know the name Justin Fashanu.
Very surprised indeed.

Changing the goal posts.
The point we are trying to make is that 'firsts' are generally noted.
You yourself referred to Thatcher is Britain's first female Prime Minister.
If it's okay to mention that, why isn't just as valid to mention other firsts?

The Falkland Islands are to issue Margaret Thatcher stamps. And,elsewhere, I see that several Commonwealth countries are expected to issue commemoratives about her.
