Many Mp's have second incomes, have inherited wealth and at the very minimum a very nice pension to fall back on. Yet they have a £5.7m mainly publicly funded hardship fund to fall back on. Its such a sensitive subject that when ever its raised minister block parliamentry time for it. Ministers argue many MP's fall into Alcoholism and poverty and draw on the fund. Wait a minute they have a wonderful welfare state to fall back on where everyone is amply provided for. They are seriously taking the p1ss and seems to have learnt nothing from the expenses scandal. Maybe one of the online petitions the govenment go on about may force the issue and then they would have to debate this if they get the required 100000 signatories.

Yes
The public weren't aware of it. It was started in 1939, before the welfare state. it may have made sense then. We have charities to provide for musicians and the like. Somehow I think that a charity, "The Distressed ex-MPs Benevolent Fund", would not attract many donations.

And yes, we are.

So reinforces my point, its not needed in this age, they are all very well provided for now...no wonder its kept under the radar, its not as if they use it for charitable purposes outside of politics.
