So, the fact that some tribes people that lived on this green and sceptered isle were enslaved by the Romans - at a time when I doubt any resident within the islands themselves would self-identify as Britons - this means that black people should just get over themselves about the slavery they suffered?

Absolutely, but I can't for the life of me think where slavery among Ancient Britons has led to people of colour not being allowed to sit at the front on public transport - in my lifetime. Can you?

Very possibly they did -- on the other hand, that whole view died some years ago. Racism is still prevalent even today.
It's not difficult, really. If a white man used a racially-charged term about black men, it's not at all obvious if they are racist or just joking. If a black man makes some racist comment about black men, you can be confident that they're joking.
And it does, or should, work the other way too. That it does not is simply because we haven't quite shaken free the world of rampant racism, and sexim, and ageism and all the other -isms.

He was answering Old_Geezer, who's AB name shares two initials with yours. Hence OG is Old_Geezer, not 'oldgit'.

And does it help them not to, many horrible things have happened in the past some even worse than slavery, but does it help to keep bringing these things up.
Now if I thought thought that by keeping the past act of black slavery alive, it would make any further abuse or discrimination against black persons non existent, then I would be one of the first to agree that it should be kept alive after all these years.
But to use me and all other whites as 'whipping boys' for the evil deeds of our ancestors is just not fair.

That's simply a matter of percecption. I have never ever thought of myself as a 'whipping boy' for any transgressions of my ancestors - apparently you do.
I would not waste my time apologising for the actions of previous generations - life is far too short, and I would not be so self-important as to imagine that anyone held me personally responsible.

For Petes sake AoG - How are you and other whites being used as "whipping boys"? Who is using you as a "whipping boy"? How is deeming it culturally offensive for a white person to use a word but acceptable for a black person oppressing you at all?
And the black and afro/caribbean populations have moved on, but we should not forget important lessons of history and the evils than man can do to other men is one of those very important lessons.
