'' why are people coming forward now. '' because they now have the confidence that they will be taking seriously. and believed.
It does make you stop and think what sort of society we grew up in if all this was happening and the victims were either being ignored or not able to report it. It's just not the world I remember back then. Mind you there was so much focus on the scandals of the royal family and politicians as i do recall.
Dot, I was sexually abused and raped by my own brother for several years from a very young age, when I told my mum she put my into care (again) and accused me of lying, that was my own mum not believing me, I really didn't think anyone else would either so I never tried to tell anyone. This was in the 70s.
Sex wasn't talked about. It was treated like it was something dirty and embarrassing.

We've more open minded now.
That's horrendous Daffy...but I bet it happened more than we think.
Well at least it's not Del Boy as was whizzing round twitter!
Growing up in the 60s and 70s it's just like they are talking about another world. Like ummm says above, things were hidden. We went through school with children from the local children's home and attended their garden parties and mum always invited some of the children to our birthday parties, it was only in the early 2000s that some of those children had come forward with allegations against the staff at the home and it was shocking then. Those kids were very vulnerable I suppose and had noone really they could trust or turn to as the people they were supposed to trust were abusing them.
Released on bail now.
Surprised this thread is still going...
my adopted bro and sis lived in a home (before we adopted them) and they told mum of some abuse in the 50's and she moved Heaven and Earth to get the evil people out and she did it, thank heavens they spoke up.
There's a major media scrum over sex offenders at the moment, for understandable reasons.

But, as has been said earlier in this thread, most of these individuals have only been arrested, not charged and certainly not found guilty. Their careers will have been placed in jeopardy and there are many around who will subscribe to the 'no smoke without fire' school of thought.

The accusers, quite rightly, have anonimity. Time, perhaps, for the accused to have it too, at least until found guilty?
It was hidden. So was domestic violence.

TV/media/internet have educated people.

We grow up thinking what happens in our homes is the norm.

I also think both parties should be anonymous until proven one way or the other.
But naming them encourages other victims to come forward.
daffy, I applaud your honesty, id think these ongoing abuse cases must be disturbing for you .it was not just in the 60/70's that children were not believed. I worked with young women who were abused by family members in the 2000's and no one believed them, so they just stopped talking about it. but it is a life long issue for them :(
I think children seemed to have generally disbelieved in the 1960's-80's. My Dad wasn't sexually abused but he was physically abused by his parents to the point where he was hospitalised and when he told someone they told his parents what he'd said and called him a liar. No wonder no-one came forward with rape allegations.
My mum and her siblings were beaten really badly. They didn't tell anyone. They stayed loyal to him as well.
The biggest load of tosh is that by naming these suspects encourages other victims to come forward.

So police wait 10 days before naming the latest. Who do you think you are kidding, Mr Plod?

Strange that the arrests are mostly 'well-known' pensioners. Are there no 'unknowns' or 'suspects' in their 30's and 40's etc out there that may be dodgy? Or is it 'cos there is less likelihood of big money payouts if guilt is proven?

Using Savilegate as a yardstick, in my opinion it is merely a witchhunt.
One of the senior detectives in the Stuart Hall investigation gave thanks for the naming of SH and said it actively prompted other victims to come forwards.

Sometimes the weight of evidence of a similar MO of attacks carried out in separate parts of the country over a number of years, helps to persuade the accused offender that all those accusations really are 'undefendable' in a court of law.
