PC going mad (no surprise really), nothings been said that warrants an apology.

everybodys scared to open their damn mouths in case they offend some so called ethnic or other.

everybody wants to be offended, whats the matter with them all
These people need to get over themselves and grow some for once, they might get a little more respect, doubt thats occurred to them though

I'm offended that they can't spell it correctly.
He obviously meant what he said, and it was offensive.

He is apologising profusely to save his career. His lucrative career. If he didn't attempt damage limitation, no advertiser, sponsor or promoter would touch him again with a bargepole.

The fact that baz is oblivious to such sutleties is not in the least surprising.
What is the definition of black?
Indeed it did Fred, so what about the infamous 'No Irish, No Dogs, No Blacks' signs that were prevalent in some areas in the 1950's?

Which word/words are PC and which aren't?

"The fact that baz is oblivious to such sutleties is not in the least surprising. "

dont be so stupid, i know it will be a struggle but just try, because in all honesty youre getting very boring.

If there wasnt money involved do you really think hed be replying over a throwaway nothing remark ? no of course he wouldnt

i'm sure in private hes probably calling woods (surly rsole that he is) every name under the sun
So if I’ve got this right, Fred, when black people (a term which white people were told not to use) were segregated and they were referred to as “coloured” it was not the term itself that offended them but its use in connection with segregation. So they then decided that they’d prefer to be called black (at least for the moment). So long, that is, that nobody invites them back for some fried chicken.

There are countless examples of this nonsense and how (or indeed why) anybody should be expected to keep up with it is quite beyond me.

Only in America.

Rather confusing, I love KFC I certainly wouldn't have known not to offer it to someone of 'darker colour' (whatever the in-phrase is now).

"Rather confusing, I love KFC"

dont think you would if you saw how the chickens were hatched and brought up...but thats another story !
Racists exist in all walks of life. My neighbours still talk of "going down to the ***'s for a pint of milk" even now, in 2013. I was at Meeting of my company two weeks ago in Central London, which was attended by over a hundred people, and somebody got up and said he had difficulty in dealing with "darkies" in his home town on Plymouth. To our Managers credit, the chap was immediately told that he was being offensive and to sit down. Which he did but with extreme bad grace.

Education needs to be stepped up it would seem.
The ****s on my previous post refer to a description used by some people for anybody that comes from Pakistan...ie pak1s. ( just in case it wasn't clear...I always forget about AB's program to root out offensive words, which is admirable, although it does interfere with our ability to make posts clear and unambiguous )
Seems like the campaign "Keep Racism out of Sport" isn't working

/// When I played at Worksop Town, the other striker was 'Darkie' Johnson. Now if I say that today I could go to jail. You know, Imran will come into the office regularly and I'll say, 'How's my *** friend?'" ///

Who actually deems a particular word 'Racist', or 'Offensive', does it go before some form of tribunal, if so then I wish to put forward the word 'BRIT' for consideration.
How is the word 'Brit' racist?
From the position of a white Englishman, it is really simple for me to adopt the same approach as baz, AOG and (surprisingly!) NewJudge oin this - it is a fuss about nothing.

But we do not live in America, as a mixed race sportsman, where casual racism is rife, and people should be entitiled to expect appropriate respect from senior members of a sporting fraternity.

America's history of slavery and racism is still recently subject to education and change, and incidents like this do not help that process at all.

But simply poo-poohing it as so much playground banter is to miss the wider picture. If casual racism is allowed to flourish, then deep-seated racism is waiting in the wings. One is not OK, to ensure that the other is not OK either.

Respect is universal - and throaway remarks based on a dubsious cultural history annd previous unacceptable attitudes and behaviour that is known and understood by the recipient is disrespectful, and should be dealt with as such.

The word 'coloured' is not acceptable these days - but some people puff out their cheeks and claim it is semanticcs, and nit-picking. But this is an ongoing process of change in langauge that has seen words like 'ni**er' outlawed in common usage.

To simply pretend to be proud of an ignorance that purports not to know the 'latest' terminonlogy is jut that - ignorance. It just takes a degree of awareness and sensitivity to make these adjustments, and deliberate failure so to do is boorish and arrogant.
// I wish to put forward the word 'BRIT' for consideration. //

I've considered it. It's fine.
Surprisingly? SURPRISINGLY??

How dare you, Andy!! :-)
But surely most insults are an 'ism' ?

Oi f*t b*stard - fatism

Old g*t - ageism

Its not just the ethnic portion of society that comes in for insults - based on nothing less than appearance. Wayne Rooney and Gazza had their share of insults re their weight.

So it's a difficult question - what can be classed as playground spats and what is worse. One of my colleagues (of indian background) is constantly 'kidded' about his receding hairline. He admitted to me that constant jokes about 'baldy', 'careful when playing snooker' etc are more hurtful than throw away comments about his colour (ie you have a nice tan etc)

Maybe the few of us that cannot see the depth of the insult are oblivious because we can't see the connection between eating KFC and an insult.

We live and learn

I think it would be better if people grew up by not insulting people rather than grew up by not getting offended.
jim360 - I am going to file that remark under my 'I wish I'd posted that!' section.
