When a couple of gay people we knew decided to tie the knot, it was called a welding and every guest was given a pair of welding glasses to wear at the ceremony. This to be sounds better than the word marriage for same sex marriages.

sp1814; If in a poll someone says "I don't mind one way or the other", it is not classed as a "yes" it is undecided or a 'Don't know'.

Khandro - I think Marriage is an entirely appropriate, and sufficient, word to ensure that full equality is achieved.

And those who bang on and on and on about equality and full equality - it just doesn't work. As was said earlier in the thread: Unlike marriages, consummation is not a legal requirement of civil partnerships. Neither is adultery recognized as grounds for dissolution. These differences won't be addressed by the new equal marriage legislation as the government does not intend to re-write these areas of law.

Equality cannot and will not happen.

Words evolve, become assigned slightly different meanings over the passage of time.

Marriage has come to mean the formal commitment/pledge made between two adults that they wish to be recognised as a couple before their family, friends and the law.

The new proposals merely extend that to encompass gay couples.

the first gay marriage in church took place in 1071, iirc. Time enough to get accustomed to the idea.

Regarding the poll, what I mean is that there are many people who aren't fussed, but if push came to shove, they would say 'Yes' to marriage equality.

There are very few people polled who say, "I don't know".

The 'Whatever Generation', tend to say, "I don't really mind...yeah...whatever".
