Whereas it was completely wrong for a pregnant woman to be attacked by two men, In a separate incident Was it right for the French police to be attacked by a mob of 60 for enforcing the French burkha ban?

I see more and more women here who wear the burkha and veil, one woman on the bus the other day was entirely clad in black, not even hands showing, nor eyes, even the chap sitting next to me shrugged his shoulders, i don't understand why anyone would wear it, but i am not religious in any sense. Nor do i understand why some women in Mediterranean countries wore black for the rest of their lives after their husbands died, nor why some Jewish women feel it necessary to cut their hair off, and wear a wig. Perhaps those of us atheists are not meant to understand, don't know..
Right or wrong if the wearing of the burkha is against French law then it should be respected, if people only abide by the laws that they personally agree with then we have anarchy, I would also like it to be implemented in the UK.
We are far too tolerant in the West, try walking out in some forms of Western dress in some Middle Eastern countries, and one would be arrested and slung in jail make no mistake.

With a Western upbringing its very difficult to imagine the mindset of a Muslim woman and understand the choices they freely make. Its hard to realise that women can be modest, not want to flaunt themselves and are quite happy to wear the Burkha. There will be women who are pressured to wear it, there are Western women who are pressured to wear or not to wear certain clothes by partners or even fashion so why should it be different for Muslim women? Its an utter disgrace that an integral part of a persons religion and their free will be prohibited by Law.
Where in North Africa were you, em? It is worn in Egypt and Syria but, as to France, a walk in Marseille, for example, where there's an enormous population from Algeria and Morocco will not produce any sightings. You'll see plenty of niqabs and burkas in Harrods and Bond Street though!
What has happened is that young Muslim women in France have taken up the niqab as an emblem, as something to wear to show solidarity and defiance for the cause of Muslim equality. That neither their mothers nor any of their ancestors ever wore such a thing is not relevant to the thinking

epona, the problem here is that we are constantly barracked with tales of integration and diversity, all the while you have sections of our society that one may not come across or indeed be able to communicate with, it's as though some are saying this is my culture, like it or lump it, yet not being part of the wider community. I wouldn't go to any Islamic country and not adhere to their laws, i wouldn't be able to, same for anywhere, yet if France for it's own reasons has banned it, then you have some who are clearly flouting those laws. I always wonder why people upsticks and move many miles away and not become part of that country, either British abroad or indeed many who have their own communities and lives in Britain but don't integrate.
if you want to see women clad in burkha and veiled, walk down the East end, Brick Lane, Roman Road, not to mention many other parts of London, it has become more prominent, whether it's because we have more people who now reside here from countries such as Somalia, and Pakistan, Afghanistan, i don't know. Perhaps as been suggested it is to show solidarity to their sisters, religion, culture.. why if so.
Slung in jail for wearing which western dress, aog? Have you tried walking bare-chested in Antibes? That will get you arrested, as it will in Menton and some other French towns. It is deemed offensive and contrary to the nature and good ordinance of the town. The French obey that local law. But they don't obey laws, national or local, which they don't, as a people, like. That's why you see dogs in restaurants; nobody is going to enforce a law if everyone is going to ignore it as not agreeable.
