I suppose the more disapproved of it is, the more people will find other ways (internet) of getting what they want. I don't imagine the percentage of gay Pakistanis is much different from anywhere else. They just need to hide it more.

Its astonishing how much open racism there is on AB. Some days when I log on its like being transported back to the 1950's. Apparently we are being "overrun" by Muslims, and Pakistanis are so obsessed by sex that they raping all the time. Another favourite is that soon all our white women will have to wear burkas, because Sharia Courts will tell them to.

I can't understand why the Editor doesn't do something about it.

The fear that Islam – along with its backward philosophy on sexual behaviour - will eventually control western countries, and impose Sharia law is not racism – it’s a genuine concern to some people - but heaven forbid they should voice their opinions!

For me, part of that interest is in seeing how close to the surface in otherwise intelligent contributors is the dread of the bogieman.

Naomi...There appears to be a wide-spread irrational fear that Muslims will take over the western world. Muslims represent less than 5% of the British population according to the 2011 Census results. Based on that its is highly unlikely, and even impossible that Sharia law that they will ever amount to anything other than a minor affair, of concern only to a proportion Muslims.

This irrational fear is constantly brought into conversation by people who have another agenda, and that is to stir up racial hatred.

I never let an example of racism go unchecked.

naomi, if the fear is indeed irrational, what state of mind creates that fear? Is it not a fear of another's race or religion? And what is the intent in expressing it?Is it not to spread the fear? And what is the likely or, alternatively, the intended, consequence of that?

If it can be demonstrated that racist comments are capable of arousing racial hatred, then perhaps the perpetrators should be addressed. As I understand the situation, this falls foul of the Law. The Editor has erased extreme comments on AB in the past and I would hope he would continue to do so.

But I accept that there is a fine line in between controversial comments and openly racist comments, and I am glad that I don't have the Editors job here !
