So what do you expect in your seemingly utopian line of questioning? Only responders who concur with you 100%? You're embarrassing yourself yet again and have clearly bitten off more than you can chew.
"Out comes yet another insult"/"absolute Poppy-Cock"

5 year old, "But you told me a mummy and a daddy make a baby."
Where does the conversation go from here at a 5 year old's level?
Let me give it a go...
"Yes darling, a Mummy and Daddy do make a baby, Daddy and Daddy didn't make you but we both love you very much"
Your turn for the next bit Daisy :-)

Jim, not all children are adopted. There are such people as surrogate mothers.
Daisy, I know a gay couple - males - who have two lovely adopted children age 3 and 2 - and those children are told they are adopted. Another couple - females - have children from previous relationships who know who their fathers are. None of it has ever presented a problem. Tell them the truth.

No need to go into grand explanations and details with very young children. They child will guide the conversation and you just answer truthfully. Only give them the answer they ask for and if they ask why then tell them with elaborating, and if they want elaborations they will ask again and should get a truthful answer. No need to go into details. It's very simple. I can't see any worries whatsoever.
I've spoken to many 5 year olds - there is only too much information when they tell you so, usually by switching off or changing the subject.
Here's a conversation between a good friend of mine, me and her (then) five year old son a couple of years ago in a restaurant as we waited for our orders...
Mum: "Did you hear about the Wankathon!?"
Me: "No!?"
Mum: " It was a charity thing to raise awareness about safe sex"
The conversation went on for a bit longer, then 5YO son chips in...
Son: "What's Auditing, Mummy?"
Mum: "Playing with your willy to have a nice feeling"
Son: "Oh, ok"
...end of conversation and no big deal made, not even a giggle.

There is a much wider issue here .The assumption is being made that the children reading these books will be British white children. What will happen in mixed classes where ,as in my granddaughters school ,about 50% are of different nationalities( mostly Asian children) whose parents do not believe in same sex marriage. Once again I would like to point out that I am just making observations on this topic.
