Good to see you back, DrFilth. Has it really ever been much different though? When were the good times?

/ when are the tories going to man up and start taking responsibility for their mess? /

Probably a year before the next election jake, Its all part of a cleverly orchestrated plan.
In the run up wages will rise, prosperity will rise, inflation will fall, unemployment and immigration figures will be down etc.

Don't peak to early.
but they don;t generate money for the country, they may employ lots of people, so i suppose that keeps them off the dole, but how does a dole office manager generate income. But business does, import, export, selling goods, that used to be our stock in trade, not to mention industry.
Thank you very much, emmie. I'll give them a ring later.
it would help i am sure... they already do this in the USA apparently..
DrFilth, //'Live for now' culture dragging down people's ability to save for the future//

Do you really think that culture only began three years ago? It didn’t, you know. Had Labour not abolished the 10% tax rate for the low paid, and had it kept its greedy, sticky mitts off pensions, the working man might have been rather better placed for the future. It’s entirely disingenuous to blame this three year old government for the years of double-standards and misrule that went before. Labour is not a party for the working man – and it hasn’t been for a very long time. You’re clinging to an ideal that no longer exists.
JTP: >Nice try VHG but blaming it on 'the last labour government' is wearing a bit thin now. When are the Tories going to man up and start taking responsibility for their mess?

Whilst it can and will take years to turn around the economy and change attitudes to things like 'entitlements' I agree that after 3 years the Coalition needs to focus on what it has done and can do and should put much less emphasis on blaming Brown/Blair.

However it's hardly surprising that the Coalition tries to blame Labour. All governments blame their predecessors. In fact to this day labour politicians and supporters have continued to put the blame on Thatcher's policies from the 1980s.
how wealthy would you say Blair is, or Ed, David Millband, Lord isn't that a joke Mandelson, or indeed any one that has been in the Labour top echelon for a while, it's no good looking at the Tories and blaming them at every turn,
The usual government responses:-

good news: "Yes, we're responsible for that, aren't we wonderful?"

bad news: "Not us guv, it's all someone else's fault - the last government / EU / the situation in the Middle East / the weather / everyone except the government"
if you are constantly picking up the pieces when things fall apart, it takes longer and longer to put them right. Not to mention we are not the only ones in trouble, at least we aren't Greece, Italy, France even.

some more for the scrap heap
Good to see you back Filthy, I have been worried about you......where have you been?
DrFilth, the unions do have a lot to answer for.
have you never wondered why companies took their business elsewhere, long ago it was apparent to some who at least cared to listen that our working practices, and indeed high labour costs, plus union intervention was costing us dear, so economically speaking if goods can be made elsewhere more cheaply, then that is what business will do. Marks and Spencer once a byword for British made clothes have outsourced for years as do many retailers, ask yourself this, would you be prepaid to pay premium prices for goods made in Britain... most don't because they can't afford to.
sorry that's a stupid typo, be prepared to pay...
