/// ‘Although £10,000 is a lot of money, it is nothing compared to what you can rake in when you are British, which was like gold dust or a gold mine to these people … they were claiming everything they could.’ ///

This is just one more such case, it would be frightening to know what is really going off that hasn't yet been discovered, and here is Cameron busying himself with the petty 'Bedroom Tax'.

Even so given the very light sentences these fraudsters got, is it any deterrent for others not to follow suit?

My home town hits the headlines for the wrong reasons again.

What really annoyed me about this case, in spite of raking in £2.5million they were also claiming benefits.

// the very light sentences these fraudsters got //
The ringleader got 8 years, which seems about right. Others got 3 and 4 years. Accessories got 1 year.

This one got away with a light sentence, and I hope all those others have their assets seized. ouch!!!!!!!! .

/// Wahidur Rahman escaped with a suspended sentence after admitting conspiracy to commit fraud by false representation. ///

The favourite thing they do is use as many names as possible in claiming all the benefits take there finger prints check them out before the claim is paid out
Trouble is many of these people come from countries where the concept of benefits is unheard of.

Also paying any sort of tax in many of those countries is also a very rare event.

So when they come to the UK they cant believe that they get benefits for "doing nothing". And more benefits if they have a disability, and more benefits for each child they have.

So they try to abuse the system as much as the can.

And of course as they pay little or no tax in their original country they want to pay little or no tax in this country.

So for us it is the worst of both worlds - a whole strata of society who don't want to pay any tax, but want to rip off the benefits system as much as they can.

I agree with AOG, instead of tinkering with the "bedroom tax" lets employ LOADS more people to look at benefit fraud. The cost of setting up these benefit fraud departments would easily pay for themselves with the benefits we would save.

EVERY person getting benefits should have their photo taken and fingerprints taken and then we can make it far easier to catch people who are claiming benefits in multiple locations.

How come when I put a photo on Facebook (a free application) it can identify who it is and ask me if I want to tag it, yet the governments benefit system cant seem to flag up when the same person is claiming benefits under different names in different locations.

What a joke of country this place has become.

If one got 8 years and another got a suspended sentence then we must assume his involvement was very minor and not integral to the scam.
Can't see that 8 years for the ringleader is 'very light'. His 'foot soldiers' got less, but that is only to be expected.

Considering the circumstances in which this case came to light, it could very well be that there's a heck of a lot of this going on. One answer could be to advertise generous awards for informants. The US Internal Revenue Service pays informants a percentage of the tax recovered. That works. The risk that the informant's evidence, if ever needed in court; and it only rarely would be, because the evidence is there on paper and in records in nearly all cases; would be discredited is minimal because of the other evidence.
250- a couple of zero's missing there i think!

Hardly very minor Gromit

"Can't see that 8 years for the ringleader is 'very light'."

Were that to be true, Fred, I may agree. However, as you and I both know, he will serve considerably less than half of that time.
What benefits did they claim then?
The crime was the preparation and possession of false documents was it not? Presumably without those they would not have been entitled to benefits.
The usual moan is that 'they come here to take our benefits blah blah blah'. But plainly they don't otherwise they would not have needed to commit this crime
I think I read somewhere that the Home Secretary can revoke the grant of British Citizenship. Surely this is a most suitable case for that once they have served what part of their sentences is deemed enough. Then a deportation would seem most appropriate.
If benefit fraud was involved, how come there was no mention of what all had been claimed and the sums involved? There could be any number of ways fake documents can be used so why is it presumed it is in connexion with benefits?
Tip of the iceberg
These immigrants and others of similar ilk have been doing this in the Uk for the last 40/50 years since they started flooding in here en masse, theyre experts on our benefits sytem and how to milk it and rip it off.

Most of these people know exactly how to get our benefits and what strokes to pull before they even get on the plane...why ?...because theyve already got friends and family over here doing it.

These people know and have done for a long time that we are mugs and will give them free money and housing, thats why the majority of them come here.

If there was nothing on offer the vast majority wouldnt even think of risking coming here
Same as all the illegals, if they thought the risk of getting sent back was high they wouldnt bother

we are an easy touch and this country is already paying the price for it
The point is: they weren't entitled to any benefits until they had falsely acquired British citizenship. Nor is there anything here which says they did claim benefits. The fraud was the obtaining of citizenship which presumably meant they could also play football for Scotland etc.
and claim benefits.

ThAt could me anything AOG. Picking a package up from the Post Office and saying you are someone else is false representaTion. What is your theory why he got a lesser sentence than the others?
NJ, you suggest that 8 years is not very light because the man will serve far less. What in your non-judicial but experienced judgment should he have got, so he served an appropriate time? 16 years? What?
do the 8 years, no time off for any reason..
