Brenden, a 50 mile commute to a job in The City must be very different from travelling the same distance to work as a casual vegetable picker on a farm somewhere.
Another problem is that many of the unemployed have no marketable skills. Polish plumbers have been mentioned. If they were all sent home tomorrow would there be enough skilled locals to replace them?
The question was "Is it wrong for firms to recruit from overseas....?" which is not the same as it being wrong to hire immigrants. If I were asked that question I would take it to mean hiring folk who were abroad and not present in this country.
Brenden would you have done your 100 mile commute if you were working for minimum wage £6.20 per hour?
We are about 50 miles from London and a years season ticket is over £5000 plus another £3500 for a years parking at our railway station. That is £8500 just for travel , £161 a week.
Travel cost is the main barrier to work now , the workers that do the fruit and veg picking get accommodation (of a sort) included in the wage, other wise no one would do it,

Do you mean that the government should stop all new immigrants from being employed, or the existing immigrants as well?

Should a million immigrants be sacked, so that the million British youths could take their jobs?

Which jobs would be targeted? Just the unskilled ones, or would it be random? I would be loathe to visit my GP surgery if Dr Hasan was replaced by Wayne Jenkins, a school leaver with a GCSE in woodwork.

If the immigrants in question are here on a work permit, should they then be deported? Because otherwise, they would be entitled to claim benefits.

Should immigrant families who employ members of their families be forced to employ Britons instead?

What government agency would be employed to check that businesses were complying with this new edict?

Would this mean that positive discrimination in favour of Britons would be enshrined in law? Is positive discrimination a 'good thing' now? Seems a bit of a turn around?

I think there's a whole raft of considerations that need to be understood before going down this road.

lol... though I'm not sure it would make much difference to the quality of care at my local surgery.
As long as there are jobs that need doing and there are no British unemployed that are willing to do them, we will continue to rely on foreigners.

Its quite simple. If we really want to address this problem, then stop people's benefits and force them to take jobs. But no political party, least of all this Tory government that we have at the moment. is willing to take that line.

What has been said earlier about working tax credits is true. The tax payers of Britain are subsidising companies that won't pay proper wages and allowing them to make huge profits. Some of these companies further exacerbate the situation by refusing to pay corporation tax, like Amazon.

Politicians hold the key to this dilemma....get back into Parliament and pass some laws !
not all on the dole are British citizens, i wonder if there is any data out there to show how the unemployed figures on ethnicity are broken down, we all being told lazy British, that is the headlines and often the words on here, however aren't there Poles/Romanians/Greeks, Indian/Pakistani, who were not born here, but have come to work, perhaps did have a job, then lost it, i wonder.
because lumping people together like this doesn't necessarily mean they are lazy Brits.
emmie

Is this about race?

I assumed that this was more to do with nationality - and not residential status. To me, 'immigrant' suggests someone entering the country to do a specific job.

And 'lazy Brit' doesn't refer to someone's ethnic background...surely?

So what does ethnicity have to do with it?
"In Canada an employer has to prove he or she has advertised the job and had no Canadian citizen apply or be suitable for the position before giving a foreign worker the position."

Seems like a plan, probably too easy for UK powers that be though.
Not just too easy, but illegal.
never seen any actually working, seen quite a few busking ,and million's begging on the street's. two russian's near me lived here 7 yrs never worked.welcome to gb and the benefits it brings
Employers ought not be able to employ whoever they wish. That is a recipe for removing all that the working class have gained over the years. In a world where the elite have done their best to remove barriers to labour movement then the working classes in a richer part of the world will just be underbid by those from elsewhere, desperate to improve their lot. It pits one working class individual against another in a race to the bottom, worldwide.

There is much to be said for restrictions of employing foreign labour whilst the welfare state is trying to support many unemployed citizens, but it is how it is done that is important. One doesn't need loopholes whereby a job is advertised at a rate or conditions it is known will be unacceptable here in an effort to claim a foreign employee was necessary.

And yes, the government ought to stop its evil course of forcing older folk to carry on working whilst there are younger folk who ought to be taking over the reigns. Again its how it is done, compulsion is preferably to be avoided, encouragement is best and should work well if folk are not afraid of not having the finance they need in their old age.

Unemployed would be where the work was if they felt it was adequately rewarded.
Tommy, have you never seen a foreigner working in this country? Goodness, where do you live? But you have seen millions busking and two Russians. How did they get into the country and stay? And how are they getting benefits, if they are ? Perhaps you should tell the authorities.
''Should immigrant families who employ members of their families be forced to employ Britons instead? ''

We emigrated to Canada and wanted to bring an adult son over to manage part of the business. We had to jump through hoops to get him over on a 2 year visa and at the end the visa was not renewed because the Immigration office deemed we could employ a Canadian to do the job and we should have been looking for a Canadian citizen for my son to train up to the job. If this had been the UK we would probably have been allowed to bring him, his wife, her sister and their grand-parents over -and given them all accommodation.

Really? where is the documentery evidence that this would have been allowed in the UK?
A new Waitrose store is due to open near me. After one week of putting an advert for staff Waitrose were forced to take the advert down because of the sheer number of applicants.

A similar story with Morrisons. I position advertised and approx 450 applicants.

People do want to work...

This is exactly what we should be encouraging.

Imigrants who come here and work contribute to the economy - if they bring their famillies the money stays in the country rather than being sent abroad
