Of course the country has changed, and immigration has played its part in that. But like all changes it has its positive and negative points. I'm inclined to believe that, at least in the long term, immigration brings more benefits than problems.

I am not disputing his right to fly a flag - I am just questioning why, given his expressed disdain for the UK, he feels especially impelled to fly the union flag?

You are perfectly correct that the USA was founded on immigration, which makes his comments all the more ironic, in my view.

Can't say I agree with him because where I grew up has had a high concentration of immigrant families since as far as I can remember, so as far as I'm concerned, there's been no change.

I can't speak for those from other parts of the country...

I've often asked the question but without answer, when is the benchmark set? Where in time was the UK so perfect that you are now bemoaning its decline? chris1957au, if you left 25 years ago can I presume it was going downhill sometime say a decade or so before that? Anyone?

I can only guess the benchmark was set in the 50s.

But like I say - that's just a guess. I don't know anyone who was alive in the fifties, so I've nothing to compare against.
