Whilst I applaud the sentiment in dragging football out of the dark ages, I can't help feeling that to name the campaign Right Behind Gay Footballers, whether tongue in cheek or not will only fuel further ridicule from those Neanderthals that grace the stands and terraces.

@triggerhippy,
does the famous chant aimed at Mr Beckham count?
(it wasn't anti-homosexual per se but it did revolve around prurient interest into what he got up to in the privacy of his own home and on that level, it was no different)
With regard to the OP, maybe the campaign needs to address those in the crowds who, perhaps, mistakenly believe that -not- joining in with these chants signifies that they are either gay or, at least 'sympathisers'.
Of course, if you're not chanting and find yourself surrounded on all sides by dozens who are (and are strangers, not 'your mates') , then it's going to take guts to stay put and not participate. Having paid good money for your seat, it's not as if walking away is a viable option.
Or is it? If you get to the ticket office before the match ends, can you request a full refund, on the grounds of abusive crowd behaviour?

/So Zehul, that means that everyone has to like Homosexuality, any sort of aversion to it means they would be homophobic. /
ymb
where did you get all that from?
I was simply correcting bazzy by providing a correct definition of phobia
Criticising other ABers for writing things that you have actually just imagined doesn't count you know?

No - most normal people don't like of dislike a sexuality. In the same way that most normal people don't have strong feeling about ironing board, Scarborough or double-breasted jackets.
People who have an active dislike of homosexuals for no other reason that they are homosexuals are 'homophobic' - it's a perfect definition of someone who has a condition which that cannot control or understand.

There are many things that persons choose to dislike for some reason or other, but they are not given a 'phobic' label, by those who find other's dislikes quite acceptable themselves.

But we are not talking about a dislike are we?
We are talking about 'an irrational fear, or aversion to something'.
Someone may dislike spiders without being arachnophobic, but someone who screams and runs out of the room and refuses to come back in - well they are displaying a genuine phobia.
The good news is that the number of homophobic people in the UK is on the decline. In 1983, 50% of people polled by the ONC said that gay relationships are 'wrong'.
That figure is down to 22% now.
Which is good.
Imagine what it will be like in 30 years time.
I believe it's these little steps (such as this campaign) which is leading to an overall enlightenment (and also, a change in demographics).

"an extreme or irrational fear of or aversion to something"
I have no fear or aversion of it I just dont like it
I dont like like coffee, does that mean I have a phobia.
I dont like shell fish, do i have a phobia or an aversion....no I dont
The word is being twisted and distorted to suit
This is just another pathetic example of the right on do gooders expecting everybody to be forced into thinking their way.
